Cast or Forged crank?

I have a 71 383 originally a 2 barrel engine with a stamping date of 70. No stamping with an E anywhere which means cast crank.  The original damper is not on the car to see if it was weighted. Is it possible that it is a forged crank?

VERY good chance it's a forged crank because NO 383's that I've EVER seen came cast crank..Now the 400 in 1972? that's a different story...I don't think the "E" you mentioned means "Cast Crank"...Especially when dealing with a 383...One sure fire way to tell is to pull the oil pan and look at the parting line on the crank, or snap a picture of the crank in the engine and we can tell you for sure....

Yeah, I know what they look like if the pan was off. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go that far. The damper is off now.  Is there a way to tell with a pic of the crank snout?

I  have been told that in 1971 Chrysler came out with a cast crank on the low performance 383's P/N 3462922,,but I  cannot verify this

I have a 71 383 that contains a cast crank - the balancer ID's it - since you dont have a balancer the only other way to verify is to drop the pan.

I thought all steel cranks were pre-drilled for pilot bushings and cast cranks were not unless they came with a manual transmission?

Post a pic of the crank from the opposite side of the counter weights.

Does the convertor of flywheel have an extra weight/drilling on them, easier to remove a cover than the sump.   :2thumbs:

The torque converter has the weights removed and is not original to the car. It did have a slight vibration from the trans area. I have new weights coming and will have them welded on. Is it possible the weights came off the damper? Professional products 80013 and the weights get bolted on from the back. It looks awful tight up against the motor for them to slip out. Any thoughts? Cause now the vibration has gotten much worse. I did notice the slip yoke has a decent amount of up and down movement. I have a new tailshaft bushing and will replace that.

Is your original post made out of curiosity, or are you trying to locate a vibration problem? If you have a vibration problem and it's getting worse, then I wouldn't think that the problem is in the engine. How about  bad u- joint or a weight fell off the drive shaft. Just some thoughts.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Both, but mainly concerned about the vibration. U-joints are good and weights are still on the shaft.

Drop the pan today, but the crank doesn't look so good. :swear:
I'm still not sure if it cast or forged I'll post more pics. Thanks
