who restores/updates rallye gauge clusters
« on: January 29, 2011 - 10:54:17 PM »
Who have you guys used to restore your rallye gauge clusters? My oil pressure gauge recently died, the tach never has worked right and neither has the clock. I would like to take the whole cluster out and have it restored and updated. I also would like to change the amp gauge over to a volt gauge but keep the original look. Who's the best and how much should I expect to pay for this?
Dave

I bought gauges and parts and did the restoration myself. It is really not that difficult. Just take your time.
Dashworx sell and restore gauges, clusters, parts etc. http://rt-eng.com
They can do the amp meter conversion.
I have also bought gauges from www.carpartsdiscount.com  They have all the gauges. New repros. Finish is nice. Maybe the color of the needle is to bright orange but it can be repainted. Dashworx has correct needle paint.
Highly recommended to use Dashworx hightech voltage limiter. The gauges need 5 volts. Any more and you will fry your oil, temp and fuel gauges.
Another tip is to be careful when you clean the face of the gauges. The white color smear easily if you wipe it. Just blow any dust off with compressed air.

I had rallye cluster updated by Tachman:

http://www.tachman.com/

There is a complete list of services & prices on his website at:

http://www.tachman.com/list.htm

He has modern electronics for the tach that will work with MSD ignition.  You could specify either 7,000 or 8,000 rpm tach.  Here is a list of services / prices for items I had done on my rallye cluster:

1. calibrate speedometer    60.00    do you want original miles or zero, can do either at no charge
2. update tach to solid state electronics, 2 year warranty   195.00
3. calibrate working temp, oil and fuel gauges 3 x 25.00       75.00
4, alternator gauge checks good                                        n/c
5.  quartz update clock, 4 year warranty                            104.00
6. polish lens                                                                    40.00
7. solid state 5 volt limiter that insures your gauges never fry  75.00
8. clock shaft, knob, set screw                                            48.00
9. trip reset chrome knob                                                    30.00
10. basic cleanup, assemble                                               30.00

Return shipping was $24.

For gauge face resurfacing, I used the overlay decal kit from Performance Graphics ($50 for cluster, $24 for odometer).

I purchased two sets of restored rallye gauges from Dashworx over the years: http://rt-eng.com. They are great to work with and no disappointments!

How are the gauges from Classic Industries?  They have quite a few:

Do the updated versions of the clock still tick as the old electromechanical ones do?

The Quartz clock conversions change how the clock moves.  It will move in a steady sweep instead of clicking.

Run and run fast from Tachman, guy is a total nightmare.
I can't say enough BAD things about this guy.  Use at your own risk.

PM me for details.

Ask him if he will take credit cards, I got screwed, trying to save someone else.

Ditto here.    :22yikes:

I sent him a great looking tach, but it needed rebuilt.

I got it back, and hooked it up. All was well for about 2 seconds as I soon smelled something burning, and the tach was deader than a doornail.

After opening it up, I found he had the wires switched as to what went to the signal, and what went to +12V.     :stomp:
