71 Challenger Pro Touring
« on: January 30, 2011 - 12:27:14 AM »
Hello everyone,

I have a 71 Challenger that I'm restoring as a restomod.  I'm from Texas and joined the Navy 5 years ago and was first stationed in Naples, Italy.  After 4 years there, I'm back stateside in San Diego, CA.

I bought my Challenger for $650 from my Mom and Dad when I was a senior in high school back in 1998.  My dad originally bought the car from the second owner as a Mother's Day gift for my mom.  I drove it all the way through college up until 2004.

The plan is plum crazy purple
Street/Road race
470 stroker 400 B block - 600tq/600hp
T-56 6 speed
4 wheel disc brakes
RMS Alterktion front/ Streetlynx rear suspension
335/30/18 rear
275/35/18 front
Vintage air A/C
Leather Recaro interior

Great start!

Adding a bumblebee stripe?

I vote against the XV interior, but that's just my  :2cents:

Yeah, I'm lucky it's a complete car with average rust I think.  The XV interior is way too expensive.  I found the same recaro trend bucket seats for way less last night.  They are cloth, but I can have them re-covered with leather later.

No bumblebee stripe.  I want as much shiny purple paint as possible. ;D  My view may change later though.

Very cool car!  Welcome!

Was wondering, what engine is in it now?  318?  340?

Purple, eh?  Cool.  Going to go with the '71 style side stripe?

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Thanks for the warm welcomes.  It has a 318 bored .030 over.  Naw, I won't go with any stripes because I don't want to cover the paint.

I'll show yall what I've done so far.  Just pulled all the interior except the dash and headliner.  The headliner is flawless!  Wish I could keep it, but I want to paint under there and it's so old that it'll probably break down soon anyhow.  I found some old coins under the carpet near the console dating back to 67 and the early 70's.  I also found a spare trunk key that someone had made.  I know, no big deal right, but I got a real nostalgic feeling when I found this stuff.  They had probably been under there since the 70's or 80's!  Think about it, that's kind of a long time.

The rust in the floor was a little more than expected.  The first pics are right after the carpet came out, then the next ones are after I cleaned it up a bit with a brush, and tapped on it with a hammer.  The fronts and rear driver side will be replaced.  There's only a small hole in the rear passenger side.  I can weld that up.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while.  Been going slow with the build and being careful with everything I do.
Here is the update for now:
Bought a built 470 stroker built by Mike Liston at MRL Performance in Michigan.  It's been broken in on the dyno and makes 600hp/tq.  Also bought a T-56 Viper trans from Geoff Gerko Enterprises in Lancaster, CA.
The front end is being replaced with the Alterktion from Reilly Motorsports.
Working on the front floor pans and ordered new ones from Year One.
Pulled the engine, trans, front end, torsion bars, and removed bumpstops from framerail.  Now I'm cleaning up the framerails getting ready to install the Alterk.
