Well, now I'm committed to a tranny swap... or maybe I should be committed for trying this!

Just picked up a 1990 A518 to swap out my 727.  (non-lockup - 2 pin unit) The guy I bought it from pulled if off a running vehicle he found in a police impound yard.

Fingers crossed that this goes well!

Thanks Bill...  fingers crossed this thing works and I can get it in place without too much damage to my reputation.  ;)

If it works I'll be heading out your way for a cold one!

Hmmm...  what's the right way to get the remains of this roller off the arm it's attached to?

It's not threaded and it doesn't want to pull off.   :stomp:  What's the secret?   :swear:

Thanks

Just found this thread... i fixed this same problem on my 71 charger years ago.what i used is a gm pt#9666748 plastic roller,it doesn
t come with that threaded metal stud and what i did is heat the roller up with a heat gun to get it very soft.you then take a pair of channel lock plyers and pinch down on the ball stud very hard.the ball stud of the metl will pop right into the plastic roller and your done.alot quicker and  no removal of regulator and no drilling required.worked great on my charger.

Hi Bill...
Some progress on the 727 ==> A518 tranny swap

Well, I screwed up the tail housing of the tranny when I was cutting it... don't ask...

I had the OD internals moved to a new housing (after notching it correctly this time) and got it back on Friday.  After a trip to Pick-a-part to get some tranny lines I needed to get the tranny in place to make a template for the new crossmember.

I'm doing this myself so it took a few tries to get things lined up.  I tell ya the tranny jack I bought from Home Depot online is the best tool ever!  It was on sale around Christmas and I could never have done this alone without it.  The adjustment knobs are strong and work great.  This tranny is MUCH heavier than the 727 but the jack made it easy.

Here are some pics.   Tomorrow I hope to get the template built for the crossmember and get the driveshaft measured for it's hair cut.

and the notch is in the right place!

Thanks Brad.  I'm going to document this as an idiot's guide to the swap and post it when done.
The biggest part so far is getting past the "I can't do that" thoughts in my head...  I find if I just break things down into simple steps it goes pretty well... shoot it's just nuts and bolts!  ;)

So the notch is for clearing the torsion bar crossmember? And (pardon me if anyone has asked this) are you using the stock shifter?

Hi all...  I'm under the car every day now trying like crazy to get ready for the spring fling April 21-22 out here in LA...

Worked on the cross member  template Sunday and got it to a point where I took it to a fabricator to work his metal magic...  It's an interesting process...  need to clear some room for the speedo and leave clearance for the exhaust pipes...
Tried to design it with some height adjustability by shimming the support bar sitting under the rubber tranny mount...

I'll get the pieces back to test fit before they get welded.

So the notch is for clearing the torsion bar crossmember? And (pardon me if anyone has asked this) are you using the stock shifter?

Good question!  Forgive me if this is the wrong terminology... the shifting levers on the A518 didn't fit the shifting linkage and kick-down linkage so I swapped out the 727 levers.  Thank goodness this is soo interchangable!  It looks like it's going to work perfectly.

The levers on the left side of each pair is from the 727.  Very similar but the A518 levers didn't fit the linkages.

The next part is holding the bottom of the shift rod(?).  I was working on that tonight and came up with an idea.  There is a bracket on the bell housing (kick down holder?) that I don't think I need (didn't have one on the 727).  So I cut a quick wooden braket to hold it in place and it looks like it would work.  I may keep thinking this one through...  but this seems to be going in the right direction.  My car has the T-handle console shifter.

The mockup...

A lot has happened in the past week!  The crossmember has been built in stages with the help of a local fabricator.  I'd setup templates and he'd get the parts ready... I'd fit the parts and make adjustments... he'd modify.  We're just about done, with final assembly tomorrow or Thursday.  The cross member is looking great.  Amazing work from the fabricator.

Also had a bracket built to support the shift rod.  I tried to make it fit the contour of the tab on the side of the 518 so it would hold better.  Tests has been positive so far.

I worked on the electrical and decided to manually control the overdrive as phase one, just to be sure everything else works before complicating it with pressure and vacuum switches.  I tapped off the neutral saftey switch which has a live wire off the ignition (the center wire).  Then ran the electrical up thru the firewall and under the carpet to the console.  I found a way to get the wire to trace up thru the front of the shifter.  My T-shifter was wrapped in electrical tape because it was crap, so I decided to run the wire to a switch in the shifter handle.  A simple hole drilled in the front and an opening for the wires to exit the handle. It toggles the overdrive (on to the left and off to the right).  Fits my hand perfectly.  The ground goes to the screw in the base of the handle.  I'm going to tape it up to hide it... will look just as it did before.

I'm spending the next few days in final assembly...  have a cooler to hook up, fluid to pour and lots of loose ends to straighten out.

If all goes well I may have the car moving this weekend!

Evolution of the cross member

The spedo barely cleared this so it was notched out a bit after this photo.

figuring out the mount

jumping ahead to today... it's pretty much done...

Shift rod bracket

In place

Building the wiring harness... splice into the center wire for the 2-pin OD controller.

Built the switch into the handle.  This temporary so I can disconnect it to mess with it.

This will get covered when it's proven to work!

Fingers crossed this doesn't all fall apart!  : )

Nice work on the crossmember!  :2thumbs:   You should keep a set of drawings when you done. I'm sure you could sell them!
