440 Main bearing question

Can someone advise me which main bearings we should use in our 440 engine, 1/2, 3/4 or full groove, we are planning to use a stock steel crank and stock rods. Thanks Brent

I would use the full groove for better oiling, especially if you plan on running the engine hard.

I would use (and have used) 3/4 groove bearings. The small area that is not grooved takes the loads from the crank better.

there are a two ways to look at it , full groove pushes more oil to the load side of the brg, the other way to look at it is without more surface area spreads the load over a wider area . Personally my opinion the crank never touches the brg or the brg will be damaged , so oil is the critical film keeping the crank & brg surface apart so I always use a 3/4 or full groove brg to get more oil between the crank & the brg to protect them

Hey fellers, I went to get the main bearings and their was 2 sets available both were full grooved clevite MS1277P and
MS877P we could not see any difference in the description can yall tell me which set we should use. Our block is a 1978  440  with stock steel crank .010 mains .010 rods  Thanks Brent

the width of the thrust surface changed , I can't remember which is the thin one , you cvanuse the thin one in either block , the wider one is better but only fits some year blocks
