Sway bar install
« on: February 02, 2011 - 01:45:52 PM »
I noticed my K frame is mashed enough to make it real tough to get a sway bar in the pass through. What are some tricks to bend it back in to shape or open it up a bit more? I don't have a hydraulic porta power and it seems a bit thick to just pry on it.

If the engine is out , put a steel rod through the hole and tap it out. If the engine is in the car use a coupler nut and bolt to jack it out? Put a heavier piece of angle iron or flat bar in first to jack on so it doesn't distort the top? I had to use both of these methods to straighten mine.

In the Hotchkis instructions it says if you have a skid plate you might have to cut the welds on the one side bend it down , install bar, then bend back and reweld?

I have a number of roll bar pieces lying around, so I slid a short pice of 1 5/8"x.134" wall tube slightly in to the hole and cranked the floor jack up on teeh other end until it bent out where I liked it. Inched may way through the frame and now I can fit any size bar I want in there. To prevent it happening again, I may put some jack pads on the K.

I've seriously thought about that, but thought Id put it off until later because of price. I've never found an assortment of used one like in the linked listing. I was always browsing Speedway Engineerings site andpricing these out from new.

Hmmm....

That set up was my original plan before I took delivery of my car but with all the other things I had to "undo" from previous owners I was in a hurry to get the car on the road as summer was coming!
I still may find another K-Frame to gear up. I go to Mooresville NC and hunt around the Nascar shops or local  race car suppliers down there have tons of Nascar take offs at really cheap prices!
If you want new or custom bars Schroeder has a pretty impressive line up! Different lengths, arms etc...

For a serious road racer this is the only way to go in my opinion? ( which I'm not) The adjustability is endless!
