My Roof NEEDS some love
« on: February 04, 2011 - 10:20:05 AM »
Well when I yanked out my interior everything was good until I looked up. Thats when I noticed something odd, shined a light on it and thats when I saw that it wasn't an inner brace but some cardboard and bondo spray painted black to look like one! So after i removed that the brace behind it was mangled.

So here's the damage to the brace that runs just above the passenger door. Sail panel bracing was unscathed.

Here is the section behind the A pillar.

And here is another damaged section above the front window on the passenger side.

Honestly it looks like they ran it into a garage door or something, of course they covered the damage from the outside with some fiberglass filler and the vinyl top.
I guess thats the repair quality you can expect from someone who spends more on the tires, rims, and stereo then on the rest of the car! The problem that I have is the car is a california desert car. So there really is no rust with the exception of some surface rust, most of which has formed in my humid garage at that. I know that to replace the roof skin I would need new quarters so thats out of the question, no reason to replace rust and dent free quarters. The other problem is finding the replacement parts for the inner braces becuase I have no idea what they are called. Anyone out there know? Any advise would be aprreciated. :clueless:

that`s not a nice surprise...  :P   Bit hard to tell from the pics, but I guess it could be repaired....   when you cut out the damaged inner structure, you`ll create some space to massage the skin back into position. However, imo the stress added to the metal will always create a bigger risk for rust to pop up.
Why would you need to replace the quarters when you replace the roofskin..?  :clueless:

If that was my project, here's what I would do.....  Take the roof skin off, the quarters do not have to be replaced, replaced the damaged structural area and put a new skin on.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Yes, California cars can have rust too.  Mine had a vinyl top that caused a lot of rust in the trunk, dutchman panel, and window channels, and it was a CA car as well.

As other have said, you do not have to replace the quarters to fix the roof.

De-skin the roof, fix the structural issues and the re-skin the roof, and you should be good to go.

I agree what everyone has said here. Peel off the top and repair the inner structure.
Kinda looks like your car was on it's top before.  :dunno:  :clueless:
