71 griile cheesegrater numbers
« on: February 05, 2011 - 06:54:41 AM »
hello, just wondering hoe the "cheesegrater" grilles are numbered for a 71 cuda grille, I am restoring a broken grille for my project and see them listed on ebay, but they are listed by numbers, such as #5, and #6, and so on, not by location. Any info is appreciated, Thanks, Chad

Each one is numbered on the center bar top facing out and they start on the driverside as 1-6.

I am also going to start on a 72 grille that has some pieces missing and read about using plexi glass for the missing pieces. I also read about the glue they used SEM Weld I called the company and they have changed to two different products. My question is what will you be using as a glue and filler product? Thanks

I started with 2 grilles to mold into one finished grille. I finished the splicing yesterday, and used 3M 5885 two part epoxy for rigid plastics to bond mine together. The stuff worked really well, as I had around 10 cracks to fix, and had to splice in the drivers side headlight holes from the other grille. After v-ing out the cracks and reinforcing the backs of the cracks with pieces of the other grille, I am very pleased with the product. It sands pretty easily, but I also used thin ice polyester putty to smooth out the spliced areas. Now I need answers for the color of the grille.  Chad

Chad,
Thanks a million! I am having surgery on my foot in a couple weeks and will be confined to the house for about 6 wks. This will give me something to do in that time.

I was reading this subject line and was interested in finding inserts 3-6 for my project. I'm new to this site but already enjoying this great info shared by the other members. I have a very rough 71 Cuda project but am determined to make it like new again. I'm a Mold Maker by trade and am looking for used inserts, even if they are damaged a bit to pull measurements off of to build new molds and re-pop the Cheese Graters for 71 Cudas like mine. I just received #1 and #2 inserts I bought on ebay for about 70 bucks for the pair. I plan to build molds for these items and after they are on the market use the proceeds to help fund building a mold for the 71 Grille as well. Anyone who is in the plastics industry can tell you, the cost of the molds is what drives the cost of the parts they make as well as demand for the parts. Does anyone know of some damaged inserts that may be up for sale? I'd rather use damaged one instead of taking good ones someone may need for their resto, as long as there's enough left to get good dementions off them.

I'm also this will help those who are struggling to find nice parts to build a fine looking car. I've loved Cuda's since I was a kid and the 71's were just rolling off the assembly lines. I was only 10 years old but knew a winner when I see one. My car may be rough, but she's going to roll strong and proud again some day.
