Just to confirm, there is a notch on the coupling closest to the steering gear, when you assemble the coupling, look for the dimple on the steering shaft. The notch in the coupling and the dimple in the steering shaft should both be lined up after you are done assembly. That notch will line up with the steering master spline, and your steering wheel will end up right side up.

The tuff wheel crush can is shorter than the standard E-body crush can.  They still should be keyed the same.

 Ya I knew that but they didn't make more than one style of e-body crush can did they? :dunno:
Meaning no way it could be upside down? Like 2 different styles for a cuda or a Challenger or something like that? I ask as I'm nervous that I sold him the wrong part somehow?

dodj is right ,,wished I had seen this before on my own  :bricks1: and line it up and try it ,,I dont think it will effect turn signals,,at least it did not on my own

I think its fine brad,,all the crush cans are the same on cudas and challengers,,or at least the ones I have swapped around were the same,,

Okay, to solve this mystery...

I've been driving around with an upside-down steering wheel for a while now, and then started working on installing some side view mirrors, finally returned to this.

Since everyone was scratching their heads (including me) on this one, I decided to try ONE LAST TIME.  So I pulled the crush can off, looked at the keying, aligned it, rotated 180 degrees, and started bashing it.

Net result:  it went on and the steering wheel is right side up.

Now I'm scratching my head at why it worked both ways when its supposed to be keyed...  The level of effort to install it was roughly the same both ways.  I did note that the metal coil that is responsible for turn signal return was positioned properly after the 180 degree turn...

I think the best way would have been to remove the shaft from the coupler on the steering box turn it 180 degrees and reinstall. But glad it worked out for ya though! :2thumbs:

One would expect to find a "master spline" to index the wheel.  My Challenger does not have a master spline and the wheel will go wherever I put it.  Don't know if this is the way it was designed or if it has been modified.  PK

The key was your quote "started bashing it"

A can with a good set of oiled splines, slides almost all the way on with little effort, maybe a little wiggling of the wheel while sliding it down.
The tightness comes at the bottom when the nut and washer is cranked down to lock it on.

Did the can still have it's master spline intact?  Probably not now.  The steering box coupler is right side up when the expansion pin is on the fender side. the little pin to lock in the u-joint is on top, but almost impossible to install wrong. Assebling the u-joint 180 out is possible though.
It'll work with what you did, so leave it.

A caution on "bashing" to get the wheel on!  Part of the safety feature of the steering column allows it to collapse upon impact, using a small plastic, maybe nylon pin in the column that will shear when the steering wheel in impacted; such as a human chest during a collision.  Bashing  on the wheel can shear this safety pin and let the column slide up or down. The whole thing would have to be removed to replace that shear pin.  PK

Like others have said, it's not your crush can.... it's your coupler on the end of your steering column that attaches to the gear box.

EVERYTHING else is keyed and that is the only place you can get the steering wheel upside down.  Easy fix.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
