WTB 1970 198 three speed Barracuda
« on: February 10, 2011 - 10:09:58 AM »
I have always wanted one of these.  A 1970 198 three speed Barracuda coupe. I need a car with original motor and transmission. Prefer a car with NO OPTIONS if possible. Message me or email: es179@telus.net  These cars were made from Feb. 1970 to July 1970. Thanks for your help.

Ok, I have to ask.  What is the significance with 198 ??
It is the base motor for the A93 "coupe" option offered by Chrysler in mid-year production for 1970. The Challenger offered with the same motor was known as a Deputy. The D13 3 speed manual transmission was the base model trans. offered with the 198.  The automatic was optional. The A93 "coupe" package consisted of the following: One horn instead of two, a one way mirror instead of a two way(day/night),  a low grade interior((L6 instead of H6 on the fender tag, no other interior was available on these cars, and only in black or black/white), a smooth black plastic steering wheel instead of the standard wood grain one, fixed rear side windows( there were metal plugs installed in place of the roll up handles in the back seat of the car. in other words, the rear side windows were fixed in place, hense the description, "coupe"), etc.  All the regular Barracuda options for 1970 COULD be ordered, but the base A93 package was really simple. It was a mid year attempt by Chrysler to sell more cars. Does that help??

Good luck with the search. I have only seen one, which came up for sale a couple of years ago. The only option it had was the color which was Panther Pink, other than that it was just what you wanted 198 3 speed manual. I wanted to buy it and restore it back to factory as it was so unique, but alas I didn't have the money or the room for it.

Is this in any way the same type of thing?

Would the 70 have a 198 on the fender tag?

The 198 motor is coded E22. It was available in 1970 and 1971 cars. It was the base motor in the A93 option.  Optional motors were: E24(225+1), E44(318+2), E61(383+2) and E63(383+4).  All these motors were also available on non A93 cars, EXCEPT for the 198.
71 A93 cars had the option of having a regular vinyl (H6) interior, both of ours do have that. They also have plastic plugs(colored to match the interior color of the car, mine are brown) in place of the rear window roll up handles instead of the metal ones used in the 1970 A93's. Also in 1971 the steering wheel is a textured black plastic insted of a smooth black plastic rim used on 1970 cars.  You could option your A93 car with anything that you could get on a 1970 or 1971 Barracuda, including a rubber bumper or bumpers. The only things I can think of that were not available on A93 cars were, power windows and a convertible top.

Thanks for all of that.  So, you are looking for the only car that was optioned less than our cars.  The 198 /6 one barrel.
I guess I didn't realize that there was actually something smaller than the slanty that I have.

My rear panels on my 71 have  chrome inserts.  I havn't seen the plastic ones before.

Of note: The 70 metal plugs have a rounded rear to them as the last picture shows. 71 plugs have an oval backside to them , I will take a picture tonight of this and post it then. Sooooooo, who out there has one of these cars with a 198 and D13 three speed in it that I can buy?!!!!

So, were all of the 70's the same as well as the 71's?

I wonder if mine could have had left over 70 parts installed instead of the 71 style.
My interior is white.

Thanks for the pics.
