transmission question

ok, not a cuda or challenger, but as i posted before, i bought a 99 ram and have some questions. I was told that if the tranny is working fine at 122K miles, dont worry about changing the fluid and filter? any inputs?

Also, the shifter is a bit strange, to go into reverse, i have to put the shifter between P and R, to get into a forward gear, i have to pull it down to 2 and then once engaged, slide it to N to get it into what seems to be Drive. not sure if there is something wrong with just the cable or if there is an internal trans problem.

I would change the fluid in every 40k. That will save your trans eventually. 46re or 47re is not so reliable that it doesnt need an oil/filter change.
Is it gas or diesel ram?

There will be someone with the opposite opinion but I say change the filter & fluid.(I've got a story but I'll spare you)..nothing good can come from a clogged filter & it will eventually.

Yes, change it. On the shifter thing, make sure everything is tight down stairs ( shift lever pinch bolt on the transmission especially) Does the shifter feel like it has alot of "slop" or is it just not accurate?

it is a gas ram.

the shifter feels sloppy, like i can move it between 2 an N with no clicks or coming out of gear.

I will change the filter and fluid this weekend. How much fluid normally comes out when you do a filter? I always go with about 25% but not sure if the ram is different. Also, does the converter on these have a drain bolt?

You need to check the pinch bolt on the shifter lever. It sounds like the lever is loose on the trans.
No drain plug in the converter.

Thanks Terry, how do i see the pinch bolt on the shift lever? just lay under the truck and check for loose stuff?

Probably the best thing to do is have a friend move the sloppy area while you look under the truck. It will probably be obvious. Make sure the park brake is on!

if the lever is loose how do i fix it? just tighten a bolt?

it will be quite obvious when you get under the truck and look. The shifter rod goes thru it.

that was a lot easier to fix than i thought. thanks a bunch. I also changed the fluid and filter and the truck seems to shift better now
