    brake question

    Looking at a 73 w/drum rear brakes, car goes forward, but when it is put in reverse the passenger tire will not turn. Guy says the emergency brake is frozen and stops the wheel from turning backwards.

    Could the brake cause the tire not to turn in reverse?

    The car has not been driven since Thanksgiving, but could the rearend be the culprit. Rearend is  3:23 and I am not sure if it is a sure-grip.

    I would be taking off the wheel and drum and having a look, if the cable is seized or a wheel cylinder you will be able to inspect and it should be done ASAP.   :bigsmile:

    Self energizing brake shoes do NOT work well in Reverse...If the car wants to stop going backwards, I'd bet Some idiot installed the shoes backwards. (Short shoe in the rear instead of the front)..You wouldn't believe how many people think they can install their own brake shoes and get either BOTH long shoes on ONE SIDE, or long shoe in the front, and short in the rear. Then, they want to go off when it won't pass State inspection...

    Yes, but having the wrong shoes on or back to front shouldn't cause your problem, the shoes will self energize in reverse, but I suspect that you may have a seized wheel cylinder, at least one of the two pistons but I would still check the park brake cable. Take the wheel & drum off ASAP and check. Also check the drum to see that it is not oval but that should give you problems going forward.   :working:
