A 833 O/D A BODY TO E BODY AND GEARING
« on: February 17, 2011 - 02:50:00 PM »
ok couple questions still after lots of searching. will my A body O/D tranny bolt to my E body trans mount? i know i will have to build a bracket to move the shifter back and my trans tunnel will be custom anyway so as long as it bolts in i will use it. Second will my A body z bar and rods work? And last can a 2.47 first gear(out of a TA trans) be put into my O/D tranny? reason being i have 430 rear end gears and with the 3.09 first gear, first will be pretty useless i think. and with the 2.47 first gear  it would be a much better ratio, like a close ratio 3 speed with O/D. Sounds good to me if it works but please correct me if im wrong. Its going to be mostly street driven with a few trips to the local 8th mile. and has a 360 with maby 400hp for now.  im also on a budjet so just bolting in a keisler 5 is not an option. and im in canada so E body 4 speeds are hard to find. thanks

1. Not easily
2. Not easily,
3 on swapping the gearset, Plain Old NO..You can't swap in a "T/A" set for only one gear as the cluster gear needs to be of the same teeth count..Kinda like trying to run a 4.30 pinion on a 3.55 ring gear...As a rule of thumb, the only way to swap gears around is swap the entire internals from case to case.

"E-body" 4 speeds are nothing "Rare"..All you need is a B-Body 4-speed from 1970-'74 and it will have the mounts for either car on the tail shaft...You REALLY need to try and get the proper trans..A-body is usually considered to be all by itself...You might even get lucky and crawl under say a mid 80's Dodge truck and find the O)'D trans that WILL bolt into your car, but will still have the 3.09 first gear..

dam that sucks, not sure what to do now look for a regular 4 speed and change my rear gears to 3.91 or something or find a truck 4 speed and just live with the crappy ratios. wonder how many people run the O/D tranny with steep rear gears and like it. Anyway thanks for the info cooter

What you might want to look at is the OD gear change that Passon offers. They convert a standard 833 4 speed to use the OD gear cluster. This nets you the OD,  more realistic car ratios, the stronger iron case, and the ability to use the widely available, small bearing retainer bell housings.

ya the passion stuff looks good but cost alot and i would still need E body shifter , rods, and z bar stuff. i might aswell just sell mine and get a tremec for that kind of money. Atleast the shifter comes with it and I do have a lakewood bell already so i could maby find a used tremec and mate them myself then build a hyd clutch with a slave i guess.  cant afford a bolt in tranny so i have to make one fit ha ha.  I wish i liked autos cause that would be so easy. but boaring and i already bought a shiney pistol grip wich just has to go in my chally.  Ill figure it out sometime :clueless:.   Hey HP2 is that an AAR cuda scoop on your chally hood that looks sweeet man where did you find that. or how did you make it
