Yep you can hook it to a three speed switch, it'll run in three speeds and not variable though...the switch determines whether the motor is three speed or variable speed.

  Are all of the wires in the same position?

Yep that doesn't change at all, just the function changes.  When I build I only use a three speed switch so even when I ship an E body or any variable speed motor, it tests on my bench with three speeds, but I know it'll be variable on the other end   ;o)

Oh wait lemme ask.....you mean from the bulkhead clip to the firewall???  Making assumptions here...

Up to 1970 B Body had toggle switches, after 71 they went to the knob type switches.  If you have a 71 up B body switch, it's the same as an E body, if it's prior to 71 then the wiring to the switch is different...

And where the heck is Slotts on this one cause I'm certainly not the switch pro  LOL

The early E body variable speed switches and late model three speed switches use the same colors to the same positions.

A - Brown w/ White Stripe
B - Pink
F1 - Red
F2 - Green
P - Blue
W - Brown

The difference is the size of the wiper switch circuit boards. The early models used two connectors on the larger circuit board and one connector on the smaller late model circuit boards.

Hey I need to talk to you about switches and something I want you to look for for me....to help you and me on the B body end of things???

Thanks for the reply Jim.  It looks like I could have used the 3 speed switch after all but I'll just leave my ends on for the variable switch so I don't confuse someone If I ever sell my car.   I like to be able to look at the correct year manual and find my wiring fairly close to what it should be.
