Must've been a long lasting one to do that kind of damage.

6.3's I've felt but weren't long and didn't do damage before.  I mentioned before, it also depends on the type of geology underground. Soft underground magnifies the effect.

Hope they're O.K.

Report said it was a shallow epicenter which will do alot more damage for the magnitude of the quake. Hope not too many people got hurt.

All good here (in Wellington, bottom of the North Island), the earthquake is in the South Island, in Christchurch, only 5km deep they are saying, really, really big bastard that has devastated the city. 7 confirmed deaths thus far and many still trapped, not good, not good at all. Prayers and thoughts to those involved and effected.  :-[

Yup, it's not the # this time but how close it was to the surface. It may as well have been at ground level. A 6.3 at 5km will destroy what a 7.5 50km deep one could, plus, this one was in a sandy type base earth zone. The first big one that hit this same city on September 4th last year was right on mountainous rocky earth so it wasn't as lethal as the ground was more of a solid base, much more in fact. One local said it well on the news, "the 7.4 one last Sept was a tea party compared to this one".  :-[

Thanks lads, I'm all good as are my family (we're far from it) but my girlfriend was 5 minutes drive from the city centre. She was supposed to be going into town and like most 21 year old girls, runs late when getting ready, so thankfully she hadn't made it into town yet as she would have been right in the middle of it. She had just got out the shower and getting changed when it hit. Only broken windows and drawers etc falling over for her. Also, I can confirm that the other Kiwis I know of on this forum are also safe and well, that includes: "Andrew", "Aaron Beck", "340kiwi", "RTDude" as well as the others.

Carl glad you are  OK, watching the news reports it looks bad, latest report 75 confirmed dead, over 200 missing. Australia has sent several rescue teams over to help your exhausted crews.   :nzflag:   :aussie:
