Fan blade hits radiator hose
« on: February 23, 2011 - 04:29:58 PM »
Just picked up a fanblade from a 318 (74) Barracuda.I have a (72) with a 318 why is this blade hitting the hose? My car was originally a 6 cyl and still has what I think is the original radiator in it. Would this be the cause for the fanblade hitting the hose? I noticed the upper radiator hose in the 74 is more to the drivers side of the radiator which I assume would give enough clearance for the upper hose.I think I may still be able to get the radiator from the 74 which would solve my problem. Also the fanblade that I replaced with this one the blades were cut down to clear the hose as well.Mostly curious why I had the clearance issue in the first place.

Small block radiator has the top inlet on the driver's side of the car.

That radiator core looks a bit weak, blue corrosion showing on some of the tubes.

What are the numbers on your radiator? A fan shound will be of help to you.

I picked up a radiator and shroud off a V/8 parts car.If the radiator shop gives this parts radiator a clean bill of health I should be good to go.Yes new upper and lower radiator hoses will be installed. One question though this radiator has a fitting on top passenger side with small rubber lines on it I have no clue what they are or where they go?I`m sure I can just plug it and remove them just really curious what they did, radiator was out of a 74 318. I may ask this question in a new post just to satisfy my curiousity if no one answers it here.

It's the overflow line.  Depending on the year of your car, it either ran to the ground or to an overflow bottle.  If you're going to do any drag racing, you'll need to go to an overflow bottle.

So the overflow lines are separate from the coolant recovery bottle?I picked up the recovery bottle with the hoses and one connects to the nipple below the radiator cap like you would expect, but I don`t see where these 2 small lines would hook up?I`m not sure were talking about the same thing. These parts were from a 74 Barracuda I have a 72 and all it had was just a tube down the side of the radiator which I believe is correct for that year. Here is a pic of what i`m talking about and yes I know this radiator looks absolutely ghastly but it`ll clean up just fine. :22yikes:

Never seen that before, might not be factory?

If you can take that plate off, I'd fab up a block-off plate and get rid of those connections.

Mounting brackets don't look quite right either, how wide is the actual radiator?

The lines are part of the 74 emissions.  The worked are part of a heat sensor. The unit with the lines should unscrew.  You can get a screw in pipe plug to fill the hole. The reason the raditor has a larger bracket or space on one side is because the radiator overflow bottle sat there.  The 74 has several different things on them, when compared to othe years of Ebodys. The raditor will work in your car.  I don't know if a fan shroud is reproduced for the 74 raditors.

Thanks for the education Challenger6pac I was fairly certain this radiator was original to the 74 parts car it looked like it had been in there over 100 years.I figured I could plug it which is what i`ll do. So where was the heat sensor located was it on the block? Again just curious I know I wont be needing it.I also have the shroud, overflow and 4 blade fan from this car so I know everything will fit.

Check with your radiator repair guy but a patch can be fabricated, that core looks narrow and the wafers between the tubes don't look good, might be the angle pic taken on. With the money we sink into our pride & joys it can be false economy getting an old radiator that could fail in a short time, remember you said that it looked over a 100 years old.   :2cents:
