440 Magnum vs. 440 What is the Difference?
« on: February 25, 2011 - 03:33:21 PM »
I am wondering what is the difference between a regular 440 and a 440 Magnum.  From the limited info I found on this topic, it appears the carb is the only difference, but is there anything else that is different?  Can anyone confirm?

The ever popular "440 HP" motor was nothing more than a plain jane 440 with a LITTLE hotter cam, Valve springs, Double ROW timing chain, and a windage tray...ONLY the "HP" stamped on the pad is why these engines are worth so much more to a restorer. Everything that is in a STOCK "HP" 440 will be upgraded when time to rebuild comes around...UNLIKE Chevy, where the "High Perf." 454 had the steel crank, forged pistons, good rec. port heads, WAY hotter cam, etc....Chrysler up until around 1976, had Forged cranks in the 440 "HP" engine...

"1 of 1 1972 Challenger 440 Convertible"

ghjedi, sorry to thread hijack, but check my sig  :cooldancing:

But they are right.  Depending on the year, the 440 Magnum and the "regular" 440 didn't have much difference beyond things that would be replaced during a rebuild.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Thanks for the good info.  I was thinking there really wasn't any difference, but thanks for clearing it up.

Don't forget the 3 or so that were used in the Mod Squad:

Although I don't think they were 440's.  :ylsuper:

Good point.  I am also 99% sure that they were not 440s.
