Muffler Question

Hey guys,

I know there have been lots of posts on mufflers lately, but I have a differnet spin.

Do you guys have any sugestions on quiet mufflers.

I have a thrush header back exhaust kit on my cuda (small block) but the muffs are somewhat loud.  My car is more of a family crusier and I would like to quite it down.  I am not that concerned with performance.  SO any suggestions?

I think I just have the factory style local Midas muffler type exhaust on my car and it's fairly quiet.  It sounds lumpy at idle but if you rev it up it doesn't get that much louder.  It's what was on there when I got it and I think the PO just brought it to a local exhaust shop for exhaust, factory manifolds.  I think it's like 2.25" pipe.

Accurate exhaust is said to be close to OEM.   But costs more of course. You could add their under-seat and beside the gas tank mufflers (4 muffs total, just like OEM).

TTI comes with Dynomax super turbo mufflers.   This is Dynomax's short turbo muffler;  I can tell you from personal experience they are not quiet...they are somewhat loud and "drone" at cruising speed.   If your young maybe they would be great.
The Dynomax "long" super turbo muffler has a good sound, not too loud and NO drone;   they are said to sound like oem hemi mufflers.  BUT...they are too long to fit under rear seat of an E-body.   I have a pair on my work truck...even my wife likes them.

How old are your current mufflers? If they are 5+ years old and are the classic glass packs the wool may be all gone which turns them into basically straight pipes. If you have time to wait i'd suggest showing up early at a car show and listen for a car that sounds like what you want & ask the owner what is he running.  That's what I'm going to do before deciding about mine.

On the Challenger I really like the magnaflow stainless system. Not to loud , just right. IMO?
I used to have for our main family car a 93 Caprice, I put on a Borla stainless muffler on that and it was pretty quiet. The wife didn't notice actually and she is pretty sensitive to that sort of thing? Just a faint little rumble at WOT? Hope that helps?

Thanks guys..some good suggestions here.

The current muffs are thrush turbos...and are less than a year old. 

Like I say they are just a little loud.  I like the idea of the stock style muffs, but man are the expensive.

I think I will try and hang out at soem of the local crusies this sumer and see if I can find somethign I like a little better.

That's what I was thinking. Add a short glass pack after the axle to reduce resonance. Factory did it on all the high end family cars like C bodies and Imperials exactly for this reason.

Hmmm....that sounds interesting.  I will look into doing that .  Certainly lots of room to fit a glass pack in by the gas tank.

Althought, I am not too sure about cutting up a very new exahust system, I may give this a try.

Well, glasspacks and elbows are cheap at the chain parts stores. You could try it with a couple of elbows off the end of your exhaust just see if it produces the reduction you want, then figure out a way to splice it in.
