T/A Replacment FRONT-DRIVER's Fender

This was from my old thread in the WIW section.  Most of the pics are gone but I save a few of my own.
The  fender is for sale and I can take it to the Mopar Indoor Indy Swap Meet this weekend , (March 5, 11 if someone is interested.   $1150.  I need my white salt & pepper convertible interior from Legendary. I'll trade for this set. I you get a Legendary dealer discout, it'll be a cheaper for you.

My 71 challenger convertible was wrecked on the driver's side left front, a long time ago, before I got it. Someone replaced the driver's fender, then is sat never to be finished, changing hands several times. The fender still has the part number on the inside. 3579625

It was put on the car and sprayed behind the headlight buckets. It was never painted besides a light coat of primer, so it has very light surface rust and a little rust on the insde by the buckets. It is a T-A replacement fender that has the special outward curve on the body line for the bigger tires. You can only see it if you eyeball down a T-A fender and eyeball a regular fender.  T/A owners know of this bulge. I'm not talking about a rolled fender lip.  It has the cutout in front, shown in the picture below.
 



I have never heard of this bulge you speak of?  Got any photos?


Barry, My friend already had his T/A in 1980 when I bought my R/T. Parked side by side, looking down the line from the rear bumper, I could see the bulge on the front fenders on both driver and passenger  side. You have to have a regular fendered car next to a T/A to see it.  On my replacement fender, I see the same bulge that I saw 28 years ago. My original passenger fender doesn't have it.  If you have original fenders on your T/A, you should see the difference when parked next to a standard one.   My part number is  3579625

This picture shows the bulge on the Jeff's gunmetal challenger side by side next to my original R/T non-bulge fender. His fender was a replacement fender, with the cutout. His driver's side is original and doesn't have the bulge or the cutout.






I have compared my original T/A fenders to fenders from 318, /6 & hemi cars, I have seen no outward bulge on any of them.

What front mounting plate does it have, got a photo?

I see the bulge. I also showed it to a friend of mine that restores Mopars.  He didn't know about it till I showed it to him. He saw it.  Any other T/A owners out there able to see the outward bulge at the body line? It has to be on the car to see it.
The original 1970 Chrysler parts book shows this fender as one for the Trans Am Challenger with F60X 14 tires.

Does it agree with the other numbers above in the interchange book?  I think the body shop needed a fender and just ordered the one that was available.

From the January 1972 parts catalog for Challenger:

3419878-9          1970, except F60x15" tires
3579380-1          1970, with F60-15" tires
3579380-1          1971, with F60-15" tires
3579624-5          Trans. Am, w/F60x14 tires

Thats verbatim out of the catalog.  I know when I bought my fender from them in 1980 we were not sure which part number to order (1971 Challenger, non-R/T, 14" wheels, NOT a TransAm).

Barracudas have six different part number pairs; two for 1970 (depending on F60-15 tires), and four for 1971 (BH and BP, split between F60-15" tires and other)  (BS, split between F60-15" tires, and other)

I bought a project T/A a few years back and the previous owner had NOS t/a fenders that he purchased in the 80's.  He sprayed some primer on them and installed them and pushed the car outside for 12 years.  They are still in good shape though with some rusting along the bottom next to the door.  The numbers are still there on one fender and the other fender is still tagged.  The number on the right fender is 3579624. I can check the other fender or get some photos if will help.  These fenders are not installed.

I always thought the notch at the front of the fender was a 71 thing.  :dunno:

The notch is a 71 thing.  This fender may have been stamped in 71 as a replacement part for a 70. Also, Chrysler intended on building a 71 T/A. If you put the two things together, you have a fender for a 70 T/A or a T/A fender that was intended to be used on a 71 and ended up not needed.  Either way it is a special T/A fender.

It's funny that the notch is not needed till the 72-74 models. We are lucky that they didn't use that funky grill in '71.
