Name That Crust

Not quite sure what it is--been on it since I bought it.  Haven't scrubbed it off yet to see if it reappears, since I wanted to take a picture and see what you guys could say.  Perhaps you guys can help me out:

Looks to me like its sediment left from evaporated water, maybe after a nice engine was

      Paint is burnt  by the Heat crossover that warms up the intake for lower emissions..
 If you ever have the intake off you can block off with thin stainless plates, the engine should run cooler & be happier then.

Definatly blistered paint from the heat crossover , if you run the engine in the winter it is useful otherwise the engine will run far better with the ports blocked off

Thanks guys.  Now here's the catch.  I do run it in the winter time (I know!).   So what am I to do?  Is there a heat shield or something that I can mount to keep the paint from blistering?

Wouldn't a thin piece of metal between the heat crossover and the blistering part of the engine help to reflect the heat? 

Would this be a law of unintended consequences thing? 

Perhaps paint with a higher heat rating like something you'd put on pipes/exhaust manifold?

I have read many times that a thin piece of stainless steel under the intake gasket to block the heat from entering is a good thing for performance  and I imagine would prevent the blistering of paint.
I plan to do this the next time my intake is off.

    I think we're thinking of the same thing......there is an opening in the head with a corresponding opening in the intake to allow heat to get from the head to intake faster....block that

Trying to Stop that "Crust" you call it, is like asking if there's a way to keep the tires tread from getting dirty while driving...The ONLY way I can see you keeping a "Freshly rebuilt" looking engine is to keep an arsenal of spray bombs in the trunk to repaint every car show...
