New Passon A-855 5 sp overdrive
« on: March 06, 2011 - 08:56:52 PM »
anyone know more about it. read about it today in the latest mopar mag, and just checked their website.
Supposed to be a .70 overdrive that is a "direct bolt in with no modifications needed"
Uses an 18 spline so I would need only a new clutch since I think I have a 23 spline now, but my clutch has been starting to slip anyway.
It supposedly uses only the 3 standard linkages, with the 3rd operating 5th and reverse?
Anyone know any more about it, or what kind of $$ we're talking about.
Had to drive my cuda about 50 miles each way to the florida mopar show today, and driving the turnpike 60mph at 4000 rpm is not fun. Guy I met there, raced mopars back in the 80s, told me, and I quote, "you havent put an overdrive in it...are you stupid?" He meant it in a nice way! Its kinda the way he is. No bull with him.
I got a kick out of that

I read about it on Moparts and have been following jamie Passon's postings.  The price he says was around $4500, but the good thing is that you can use your old shifter handle. Yikes!

Looks like a pretty cool setup.

but the good thing is that you can use your old shifter handle.

And it also uses your old shifter rods with a converted "Old School" shifter mechanism.

Yep. It's even shaped similar to an A833, but with an extra gear in the tailshaft housing. It looks quite a bit stouter also.

To use and 18 spline shaft, the throw out bearing will also have to be changed out.

Why?   :clueless:  I know that the clutch plate needs to be changed if you have a 23 spline but I heard that everything else bolted up.

I would replace the throwout bearing with a new clutch anyway.
Flywheel too?

Shelbydogg is correct.  The throw-out bearings are different from small block (23 spline) to big block (18 spline).  By the way - the 18 spline throw out bearings are expensive!  It's like mentioning HEMI and the price doubled. :clueless:

Small Block= 23 Spline? hmmmm, You must be thinking Ford or something as The roadrunner that came with the 383 had the 23 spline A833....

Only the "Hemi" and 440 Sixpack came with the 18 Spline A833's IIRC..

You are right, however this new tranny is set up with 18 spline, so the clutch will have to be changed to use it.

$4k is too rich for my blood. Just going to have to live with my car not being a highway cruiser.
If I keep it 50mph or below the rpm's are reasonable.
I just dont get why it revs so high with 3.54 gears.
Something isnt reading right.

Passon also has a 4speed Overdrive  $1795 for the conversion kit..  $2995 for the completed unit..
(833 18spline)  In 4th gear it will make a 3.54 adjust to 2.83...

ratios
          Stock        Overdive
1st     2.65-1       2.66-1
2nd    1.93-1       1.59-1
3rd     1.39-1       1-1
4th     1-1            .80-1

Your tire size could be factor as well... Shorter tires means more RPM's at higher speeds...  Go to the Speed vs RPM Tire Size Calc. forum on this site.. There is a link that will show what RPM you should be getting at a certain speed with a certain tire size..........
