If it's cranking interlock switch is not the problem....... Test for voltage getting to the ballast resistor..12V on & start position.

ok, sounds good. the frustrating part is that it ran perfectly after i changed my coil, wires, plugs etc. it's just odd that the day after it all crapped out...

Do you have the linkage that goes from the column to the tranny still ? If not the arm it attaches to has got to be in the right spot before it will start? ( In the engine compartment)

Try this with a multimeter these guys know thier $#!7!! If it is low voltage they can offer further assistance.

check your voltage at the ballast and at the coil and check spark at the plug and check grounds as mentioned earlier and forget about how it ran the first day as sometimes crap happens when u replace things,we have all experienced the same effect,

i believe the ballast lowers voltage to 6-8 volts. check for voltage at the coil / ballast going in then out .
does it have spark? make sure the neutral safety switch is working or the car will not start. try to push the shuft lever all the way up and turn egnition key at the same time .

so i finally got it going. i had to pump gas into the carb 4-5 times then it slowly started. when i took it out it shuddered under low speed, especially under light throttle load. it seems like the timing is off, that the best way to explain it. when i pressed on the gas at a light, it felt like it skipped. i checked all the wires, replaced the ballast, made sure the coil was in right and all connected and again this morning it wouldn't start. any ideas?

u said it had set for 19 yrs,,how did u clean the tank? is it getting enough gas to run? is the gas filter clogged ?maybe you got dirt or rust in the carb. did you change the carb or fuel tank or the filter ? check your vacuum advance, that can hurt the running if its not working properly,,is it still got the original ecu on the firewall ? it could be going bad after sitting that long,,

we fully cleaned the tank, replaced the fuel lines and a new filter. the carb is all orignal and has not been rebuilt. the ECU is the original unit. i didn't see any loose vacumn lines when i changed the coil and wires.

Maybe the fuel filter is plugged? I know you said the lines and tank were cleaned but who knows maybe there was some crud that got in there somehow and plugged it up, try removing the filter and put a piece of rubber hose in it`s place and see if it runs better.

EMCD, you've never answered any of the questions regarding whether this thing has spark at the plug or not. It's impossible to help when you can't eliminate some of the variables. Now you say it started, ran lousy and won't start again and it sounds fuel related, but maybe not because we still don't know about the ignition. For the second time, pour 1/2-1 oz or 15-30ml if you're a metric man, down the carb and see if it'll fire- if it does, then at least you know it's fuel and most likely in the old, dried out and/or bunged carb.
