My new arrival - Jeep V8
« on: March 12, 2011 - 03:17:49 AM »
I feel like I've got to tell everyone; I just picked up a 1999 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7, only got 63K miles on it.  I'm liking it a lot - seems good on fuel too.

Really? I heard they were kind of bad. I was in the market for one of those or a Cherokee Classic with a 4.0 but decided to just wait until the Cuda was done. I suspect my $$$ would get side tracked and end up buying 4X4 parts instead of Cuda parts.

No pics yet sorry, but hey you know what they look like.

As for fuel, I checked a couple of reviews before I bought it and I didn't see any reports of bad mileage.

This is replacing my 1996 4.0 straight 6 Cherokee and so far it seems at least as good on fuel, in fact it might even be better but I'm struggling to believe that.  I had a '95 4.0 before the '96 and it was about the same too, so it's not just that my '96 was a bad one.

I know a bloke with a 4.7 Ram and he also says his is good on fuel.

I'm still getting used to the level of equipment it has, I keep finding new things.  I think I wouldn't be surprised to find a multi-ball feature.

I believe the 4.7 is a small V8. Isn't it the same one that's in the Dakota and Rams?

Yours will be a 318 Magnum then, I've got one of those under my bench, there is a V6 version of that engine (same basic design with two cylinders cut off).

The 4.7 is a bit unusual for an American V8.  It has aluminium heads and two overhead camshafts, no pushrods.  It also has a nearly hemispherical combustion chamber (they call it the semi-hemi - LOL).

Did you know that Daimler in the '60s made a 2.5 litre V8?  That was a proper hemi design as well but they couldn't call it a hemi as Chrysler had registered the name - another LOL

I used to have one, it was a good little mill but thirsty.  2.5 litres is about 150 cu in !!

Here's a photo of my old Daimler.  They also put the same engine in a smaller car called the Dart, and then got into trouble with Dodge, you can guess why.

Cool, never saw one of those before.  Looks like an old Jaguar...nice!

Yes, they had the same chassis and panels as the Mk II Jaguar with only small differences in the chromework.  You can see in my photo where the top of the grill is wavy whereas a Jag would have been smooth, and there's a "D" ornament instead of a leaping cat.  The interiors were very similar too, but the engines were completely different.  All the Jags had straight sixes.
