Does it make a difference: sound deadening insulation?
« on: March 13, 2011 - 05:35:57 PM »
Just wondering for those who have put in some sort of sound deadening material like Dynamat, does it make a big difference if you drive with the windows open?  Is it worth it?  :dunno: Just curious.  Thanks in advance.  :)

Hey Phil,

I think if you have an A/C car, it might be worth it, but otherwise I don't see the need for it. Like you said with the windows open all you want to hear is the roar, right?  :grinyes:

Hey, Jim!

Thanks for the reply!  Yeah, no AC for me.  I have the interior out and was hopefully this spring put it back in and didn't know if I should do the insulation route.

One big issue is that I will sometimes get water inside the car from a hole in the cowl somewhere and figure if I have less stuff under the rug, the quicker it will dry and not hold moisture.  Yeah, so probably best no insulation stuff.

Besides, I need the windows open to listen for parts falling off the car.   :bricks1:   :roflsmiley:

I'm looking into using Lizard Skin to insulate from heat and sound. It is spray on and sandable.  You can also paint over it.

One of the things the undercarpet insulation does is reflect heat from the exhaust to keep the interior cooler.  My Challenger has a 440 with headers and it gets really hot from underneath.  It also deadens the sound reflection from the road.  My car had turndowns after the mufflers before the axle for a little while.  Even with the top down the noise in there was horrendous.  I put the carpet in loosely and it quieted down some.

To calm your leak fears try this:  Put a small hole in the dynamat or whatever you use right over one of the factory body plugs in the footwell.  Then put a few pinholes through the plug to allow any water that collects to escape. If you get the foil lined dynamat it will act like a barrier between the moisture and the metal of the floor.  I know it's just a stop gap method until you get the moisture problem figured out, but it will help you with your short term problem.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Thanks for the input guys!

Lizard skin?  Interesting, I'll look into it.

Thanks for the tips, JHC.

I've always thought the sound of these cars is part of the character, but I agree with JHC, the exhaust really heats up the floor. I'm thinking of putting some just on the area between the seat and firewall.  :2cents:

:roflsmiley:  I like it!  I just went to the fabric store and bought that aluminum sided wool stuff by the yard.  It was cheap, maybe 30-45 bucks for the whole car.  I have just enough to do my roof.

I love the sound too, but I don`t care for resonance in the bodypanels. Stuff like dynamat eliminates it pretty good.

sound deadner does not stop the noise...it changes the characteristic by changing the resonance of the panel
