« on: March 18, 2011 - 05:30:13 PM »
I'm looking to go to an Aluminum Radiator for the old Challenger, I have a 26'' in there now, but I'd like a little more cooling.
What do you guys like?
THANKS!!!

do you need an oem look?
mine is a northern 26" radiator and it works great!
Dont even use a fan shroud with my 440-6.
I would love to put a oem type top cap on it though.
Its the only thing under my hood that doesnt look original.

If you have a 26" radiator now, why do you feel you need more cooling?

I don't have to have an original look. I have a 340 that we stroked to 416, it runs about 460 HP. Not a really high performance motor, but I think my old original radiator just won't cool as well as it needs to. The car sat for about 10 years, maybe it's too gunked up, I ran just water and vinegar through it to clean it. Maybe I need to do it again.
The water gets up to 210 and 220 on hot days in traffic, I'd like it to run cooler.

How about Ron Davis radiators????

you should do a search because I know there are a few good cooling threads on the site. Discussions get into copper vs aluminum, 2 row vs 3 row, etc.
Check some of the vendors for advice too.
Some people have cooling issues that turn out not to be the radiator.

My radiator guy says there is no such thing as a good aluminum radiator.  He has been in the radiator building, rebuilding and repairing business for a lot of years and seems to know his stuff.  He says that a 26" is not necessarily better than a 22".  Some six cylinder and 318 cars came out with 26" while some 383's and 440's had 22".  It all depends on the tubes and fins. The number tubes don't mean much if they are too small or the fins are too far apart.  I just had a 22" re-cored with two rows of 3/4" tubes with 16 per inch fins.  He says that if I have overheating problems with my 440 I should look for problems other than with the radiator.  I'm running a shroud and have a 18" 7 blade fan.  PK

I met a gentleman at the Mopar nationals and he was manufacturing aluminum rads in the Buffalo area.
I lost his card and info so not much help.
But if anyone knows of who I speak, I would like to know of his where abouts.
thanks.

Champion makes a nice rad.  Ya can't beat the prices.  They sell em on ebay.
http://motors.shop.ebay.com/koolradiatorscoolingsystems/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562  They sell 2, 3 and 4, core rads.  Factory shroud bolts on.

I have their 2 core but my temps still creep up idling in traffic on a 90 degree day with the ac on behind the 500 stroker.  My 4 core just arrived yesterday.  Ya can't beat it for $265 door to door.

I have a similar engine. Replaced the old 26" with a BC unit and saw a good 10* drop in temps!   I needed some specific outlet locations for the RMS Kmember. So it fit my needs the best. Very similar to the Champion,That's a nice looking piece! And a good price! BC is pricey,And the quality was..Eh. I heard crossflows may cool a bit better.   9 blade pump,180 stat.  2x12" fans.  I never get close to 200*.    Griffen makes a nice one too, There are quite a few out there...   R/T

yuP,Brace was my first welding project.  very easy,Effective,And inexpensive. Gave me lot's of ideas with quick release mounting. Upper/lower rad. supports. Multiple frame connectors...         I'd be happy to make one up,But It's an exact fit type thing. And should be tack welded on the car first.IMO. To get the most benefit. These cars are far from identical.  Bring her over to the shop...!   :working:       R/T

I'd love to, but the fact that you're in Colorado and I'm in Ontario kinda puts the kibosh on that. Could you take/post a few more photos of the attaching points? That'd be appreciated. Thx.!

Is that 4 core a 22" or 26"?
