Need list of gas tank parts for my 73 Challenger
« on: March 22, 2011 - 09:24:37 PM »
Hey, everybody.
My name is Jeff and I'm new to the forum - glad I found you guys.  I recently purchased a 73 Challenger that is a driver but still needs plenty of love.  Apparently the gas tank went bad so it was removed and the car is running from a fuel cell in the trunk.  The trunk pan is pretty much gone, too.  I'm going to be replacing the pan so that I can then wean her off the bottle and get her back on a proper fuel tank.  What I need to know is what are all the parts required to do this?  I have acquired the following parts:

> fuel tank
> fuel tank straps
> J bolts for fuel tank straps
> felt pad for fuel tank
> gas cap
> inlet tube that gas cap attaches to
> tube from inlet tube to fuel tank
> sending unit
> rubber fuel filler neck seal
>rubber gas tank grommet
> fuel filler tube gasket

Am I missing anything?  Anybody maybe have a schematic I can reference?  Just trying to get all the parts to make it right.  Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum.  Anyway, thanks in advance for any help!

First of all, welcome to the site.  It doesn't take long to get answers to your questions around here.  Everyone really does a great job of helping eachother out.

The filler tube bolts to the quarter with four philips head screws.  The tube goes right down through the trunk floor and into the tank.  The gas cap screws right onto the filler tube.  I don't know what you mean by "tube from inlet tube to fuel tank".  Can you post a pic of everything you have.

The only thing that you need to look for is if the vapor separator is still attached to the shock X-member.  That is the part that the four vent lines coming out of the tank go into.  You need some type of tank vent.  The vapor separator was the venting system for the fuel tank from 72-74.  If your separator is missing, you'll have to either find one or rig something else up for a vent.

Welcome to the forum Jeff!
Some reproduction sending units have given some grief. Problems seem to stem from the grounding of the unit. Search threads for sending unit and one or two of them will have instructions on improving the grounding of the sending unit. It will make your gauge read better.
Seems like a pretty complete list. Some 3/8" or 5/16" fuel line to accommodate the fuel line routing back to the original location?

:iagree: and some hose clamps and a locking ring for the sending unit if it doesn't already have one, the nuts and washers for the Jbolts. Was gas cap on the initial list? brain fade.
