What colour engine
« on: March 24, 2011 - 02:34:54 PM »
Hey all, stuck here on what direction to go on engine colour.
I was thinking that i should go the 340 look and paint the engine street hemi orange ( is that correct)
or sleeper 318/360 blue.
The engine is a 71 408 with an aluminum top end from Edelbrock running a Thermoquad from the man Demomsizzler.
I am kinda leaning to the blue, when was it first used on 4bbl motors?
What do you guys have an opinion on?
Not even sure if this was the correct place to post this question.
Thanks.
Jackson from Toronto.

Orange.    :2cents:   :swaying:    Blue wasn't until 72-3?   If it's going in a 70-1 I'd go orange. 72-4 Blue. :dunno:

The 340's changed from orange to blue in March/April of 71.  So blue is correct for a 71 E-body built around that time frame.  If the car is not stock, then you can do what ever you want.  You see a lot of orange engine...maybe blue would be a better way to go?  I can't make that decision for you.

I have been leaning to blue for that sleeper look, and I don't see it much even on cars that should be.

Personally I would always pick orange, no matter what year it was lol. I just like the flashy look of orange better.

my hp440 will be blue combined with aluminum .  I like the orange, but not with the bodycolor I used... ( which isn`t original either)
with your car being dark green ,I would go orange.

You're not going to fool anyone into thinking it's stock with Eddy heads on top.  They stick out like a sore thumb, even when blue.  That being said, think about how you want your car to present to others.  When the hood is popped do you want the bright orange engine taking the attention?  Or a more subtle blue that leads the eyes to look around and see the rest of the engine bay?
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

You could only get a 318 or a 360 in 74 so no matter what color you paint the 440 it won't be "correct".  You can paint it what ever you want.   However, in 74 if you ordered a car that had the 440 as an available option, it would have come painted blue.

After seeing your motor I would paint the block a silver or leave it black.  I like the alluminum that is on it.  The alluminum would really look good against the green. I agree with JHC.  The engine will never look stock.
