Where do these connect to?
« on: March 24, 2011 - 02:45:10 PM »
I have 2 wires with bullet connections. One I know is the clutch saftey switch wire it is green. What does the other end connect to? The other comes out of the firewall and is tan with a black stipe that someone long ago grafted on the green wire to it. What is it and where does it go? Then there is the little bracket that came off the battery tray. What is that for? So many parts and at my age I have sometimers. Sometimes I remember and sometimes I don't.

The tan wire could be for the tach.  The tach wire comes out of the firewall by itself and has a grommet on it.  The wire on my car is brown and has a bullet connector on it.  A small section(maybe 6 inches) of wire that is tan with a black stripe connects to the tach wire and goes to one post of the coil.

I've never seen a bracket like that on my car.

My tach wires are blue for power and gray for the signal. Perhaps we should find out what car and what year we are talking about. The wiring harness's might have changed thru the years.

His signature says 72 Rallye so that's what I assumed we were talking about.

Also, posting a picture of the wires in question and where they exit the firewall would be of great help.

Only one of the 3 pics posted. Hopefully here is the other 2. I have a 72 ralley 340. I tried to post quick because when i got back from the shop it was time to go to work. That small bracket was attched to the mounting brace for the battery tray. Weather it belonged there or not is another question.

This is the hole where the tach wire comes through the firewall.  It looks like that is the place your tan wire is coming out of.   Remember that mine is a 73.  Your 72 could be different.  If you can trace the wire back to the gauge cluster, you'd have your answer.

Thanks burdar. I am on the way back to the shop now. I will get on my head and see if goes to the tach. All I could see yesterday was that it went into the loom. What does it connect to under the hood? I know the bottom pic. is of the clutch saftey wire. But againg I do not remember what it connectc to under the hood.

IF that is the tach wire, it will connect to one side of the coil.  I don't know what side though.

It connects to the "-" side of the coil. I have a feeling it isn't the tach wire though.

I just looked at my harness and the wire coming out of that hole is NOT brown like I thought.(it was just dirty)  It is a gray wire with a black tracer.  The small piece of wire that connects to the coil is also gray with a black tracer.  The gray has discolored and looks tan.  The gray wire does plug into the back of the tach.

Here is a pic of the original loom and the new wire. The connection with the long leg will not attach to the starter relay. The tits are not long enough. From the other pics I have from prior to disassembly it did come out by the starter relay but I do not think it was connected.
