PICK A HOTEL - Reopened...
« on: March 28, 2011 - 01:59:15 PM »
Okay - decision time, and we have to work quick.

I've called around to a bunch of hotels.  I'm focusing in Mechanicsburg where there's a bit more to do, closer to Hershey for those who might want to visit, and closer to the highway junctions.

A few problems encountered: lots of hotels are already booked.  In fact, most don't have double-rooms available (meaning 2 queen beds.)  Also, rates are somewhat high, though it's not really unusual.

Here's the breakdown of my options:

Courtyard/Mariott West Harrisburg - $129 a night.  Only Single King Bed rooms are available, though the rooms have pull-out sofas that - if you ask when reserving - they'll have opened and made up before you arrive.  This is a NEW hotel - it was built while I was living in the area.  It's further West from where we've stayed (If I still lived at the same place, it'd be walking distance for me!)  Quiet street, ample parking, nice place.  (They offered us a $20 nightly discount - reflected in this price.)

Best Western New Cumberland - $109 a night.  Only single king bed rooms available.  No pull-out sofas.  Might be a problem for those bringing families.  This hotel is I think right in front of where we've stayed in the past.  Not sure on parking (but we could always usurp the lot of the original hotel!)  They offered us a $10 discount.

Comfort Inn Capital City - $99 a night - DOUBLE AND SINGLE ROOMS AVAILABLE.  I asked for 4 doubles, 8 singles since most of us only bring spouses.  Rate is for either room.  This hotel has a huge lot, and is nestled back near a retirement community/business park.  It's near the Courtyard listed above (and oddly even closer to where I used to live.)  I'm thinking this is our best bet - honestly.  They offered us a $10-15 discount, if I recall correctly.

Best Western Plantation Inn - $80 to $89 a night, Single's and Double's available (respectively) - NO BLOCKS AVAILABLE.  I called asking for a block, and I THINK the guy I was talking to said, "I have not many rooms open..."  So take that as you will...  If you want to stay there, it'll be first come, first serve.  It does have ample parking, and is tucked behind a Cracker Barrel restaurant, just off route 15.  There was no discount offered.

DUE TO THE TIGHT SCHEDULE as far as availability, I'm going to have to make a decision by this Wednesday - I'd even like to book tomorrow if possible.  If you want to stay with a bunch of the CC.C folk, please vote in the poll.  Whichever is winning by Wednesday I'll reserve (unless it's the last one, of course, in which case CALL NOW.)

Once we have a block I will of course post all the contact/code info in the hotel thread.  (Note that taxes aren't included in any of these rates...)

Thanks, guys.  Lookin' forward to a good weekend!

Jeff . . . How far away from the show are these places?    Are they east or west of the show?

All still East - near to where we're used to staying.  The hotel we used to stay at was off of I-83, which at that point is running nearly North-South into the city.  The second option on the list is in the exact same place (just different hotel.)  The other three I listed are a few miles West of I-83, just off of Route 15.  This was the area I used to live in, and was maybe, (oh I dunno) TWENTY MINUTES from the hotel we used to stay out.  It's also closer to the show, and still provides just as many ways to get there - Turnpike (which is VERY close by), Route 11, or I-81.

The Courtyard, Comfort Inn and even the last Best Western are pretty close to the restaurant we've gone to on Saturday nights for the past 3 years.  There is a mall nearby, grocery stores, liqour stores - pretty much anything you need - all within a 5-minute drive.  I even know plenty of places we can order pizza from for Friday night, if we wish.

Well, I'm sure like most, I'd like to walk the fine line between quality and affordability.  :)  Sure a 5-star hotel would be nice, but $30 a night means an extra $100 bucks that can't be spent on swap-meet parts, food, and uh, boooze!  :)

$30 extra a night if car security and a nicer place is no problem with me? I've never had my car out of my site when it wasn't in the garage before, but I guess that's what insurance is for? :scared:

You won't have any more or less visibility of the parking lot area in the Mariott as you will the Comfort Inn.  In fact, if you want to get picky about it, the Courtyard is right along the highway, meaning anyone driving by can see the parking lot.  The Comfort Inn is back behind a small shopping plaza and an office building.  The only people who will know we're back there will be other guests at the hotel.

Dave, you say you're not coming EVERY YEAR....  And then you show up.

Here's a sattelite view of the Comfort Inn.  Must be somewhat old though - the patch of dirt just visible at the top right is now a large business complex that was done some years ago.

However, assuming that this hotel hasn't changed at all, that small lot at the very top of this picture should be perfect to set up with our cars.

Unless the votes are drastically different by tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, I'm going to go ahead and book our rooms.  I'll try to go up to 14 slots if they can - mostly singles, with 4 or 5 doubles.

Sound good?
