Goop that will seal in oil

So I have an oil pan on my 2003 Durango that has a problem with rust scabs.  Not sure why....but they are big blisters.   Well, one started seeping oil.....so I drained the oil, cleaned everything up and used JB weld. But oil ended up seeping thru anyways.   Its not an emergency yet, but need to rectify.  Changing the pan will mean either lifting the engine part way out or dropping the rack and front axle/diff.....both are a lot of work and will take time.....so looking for a semi-temporary fix.....

Anyone know of any type of sealer, etc that I can use that will work even if there is some oil there?

I know it sounds like a lazy-ass question....but I need the truck daily and cant have it tied up in the garage being worked on for weeks like I can do with the fish....

Any ideas?

I saw somewhere a product that Permatex makes....a spray sealer....called spray and seal....for leaks and such...

For the price I may try it....

I really dont want to drop that pan.

Wow, I used J.B. Weld on a gasoline leak before with success! It must have something to do with the changes in temperature from idle to running.

No experience with anything in this area but I'm thinking a patch a couple of inches larger in each direction than the hole, scuff & clean the surface along with a suitable adhesive.

I think my issue is that even after it sits empty of oil for a while , there is still enough trace oil left in the hole/bubble area that it seeps thru and ruins the seal....

I dunno.

Gonna try something one more time.....I guess.

I agree with Bullitt.  If you try to apply something directly on the hole you get a couple problems.  1 the metal is weakened with rust and is flexible enough to wreck your repair and 2 it's soaked in oil.  The hole is permeated with it, nothing will stick directly to it.  I think if you follow Bullitts suggestion and patch it like you would a tire it may work better.  IE cut a piece of metal larger than the hole and use it to seal AROUND the hole rather than IN it.  If you allow it to cure properly it stands a better chance of actually sticking and resisting the oil that is seeping.  Another repair I've seen done by "redneck engineers" is if the hole is tiny, like just a weep hole, and it's low on the pan put a short self tapping screw in to seal it.  It won't be perfect but will keep most of the oil in till the repair can be made properly.

Use a heat gun and get it nice and warm then you sand the rust off then spray it off. With brake clean the heat will thin the oil so it will bleed out of any small hole. Then warm it up again if you see oil use the brake clean again. Once you get it clean and warm the use the JB to seal it. But it has to be clean and dry for the JB to hold. Heat will thin it and help it setup faster.

Been there, done that and it worked fine on an old lawn mower gas tank. But use a rubber "washer" on the screw for added seal effect.

Thats a pretty good idea there......may try that.

My concern now is that I have slthered the problem areas with JB weld.....thinking i may have to remove some of that......and concerned I will make it worse....grrrrrr......
