alternator or bad voltage regulator sounds like your  problem ,,have a new new on mined t is still not putting out enough,,i get 14+volts right at the alternator but only 12.5 at the battery which means i have to buy another voltage regulator   these new parts are cheap crap,,but it has the same symptoms as yours fr what I read

your problem doesnt sound like the voltage reg. at all if u are getting 14 volts at the alt stud and 12 at the battery u are losing connection some where take the wire off the alt stud tape it up run a new wire of proper size straight to the battery or starter relay. I bet u it charges assuming u have 14 at the alt.

So...As usual.    I'm confused.     Here's a pic. This is how it was. All I did was put in a new alternator. Oh,And pull the whole thing apart!    

There's two wires going to that post. One small green going to the top connection. What's that thing that looks like a connection in the middle with nothing on it?  Does this look right?   Thanx ALL!!   R/T

looks like a dual field alt. get u a flat voltage reg. and a plug and u can use that alternator i believe. is that the alternator that was on it when u pulled it apart? does that green wire run to the existing voltage regulator? with the key on if u hook a test light to the positive side of the battery and touch the where the green wire connects does it light up?

I'm going to grab the old alternator.  When I connect the test light to the positive on the battery and touch anything it goes on. When I touch it to the green wire on the alternator it goes on.  I'm checking where it goes now...

That green wire goes to the voltage regulator. On the right side.  FWIW.

does where the green wire attachs say grd? which stands for ground. to upgrade to the flat voltage reg. and get ur alternator running u will need to splice that green wire on the new plug to that green wire u will have a blue wire left on the new voltage regulator you will run a new wire from that un used connection on your alternator to the blue wire on the new regulator u also will need to connect the other wire on the existing voltage regulator to the blue wire on the new plug. i am sure this has confused the hell out of you but if u look at that link i posted earlier on the wiring schematic on the right side bottom of the page it shows what i am talking about.

   They sold you the wrong alternator.  You have 2 field connections plus the alternator output.  Your car is designed for the single wire system.  You can either modify your car for the dual field alternator, or exchange it for the proper one.  Once you do either, you should be in business.

Here's a pic of those alternators.  Sure look the same to me.   We have only two connections to the alternator. One that goes to the post,Which actually consists of two wires going together. And one small green wire.   

Can I just run a large gauge wire with breaker or in-line fuse installed right to the battery ?

Or is it the wrong alternator ?   I see the old one has two grounds and one field. And the new one has one ground and two fields.

Put the old alternator in.   Do I hook that green wire to the GRD or the FLD ?

You need to ground one of the field FLD terminals to use the newer alternator on an older system.  It will work fine.

I ordered a different alternator from NAPA. They said they would exchange it.  It showed only one field by the looks of it. Right now we put the old one in with a ground wire. Still not a full 14 amps though. It runs low unless at decent rpms. So tomorrow the new one comes in. We shall see...      It didn't kill the battery instantly like before with the lights on. Weird.   Ya' an upgrade is in order soon. As is a bypass.  Can i run a large gauge wire right to the battery?   Hey, Thanks Tom!  I might chuck the new one in and quick see what happens with a ground. R/T

my cuda has a large gauge wire run straight to the battery terminal u need a decent fuse or a marine circuit breaker works good like goody has. when i did my bypass i pulled the old wire out of the harness completely under the hood. but my bulkhead connector was toast at that terminal. i also put a relay on the switched 12 volts going to the voltage reg. and alternator field wire. no more blinking headlights at an idle now.
