Component testing--Skunkworks style

While waiting for some things to happen like glass installation and an exhaust system I thought it might be prudent to do some component testing using practical methods with the components actually working as if the engine was running. With no exhaust system I have yet to start the engine and do the cam break-in. With my limited test equipment I had no way to know if the components actually work in the real world. I tested the electronic ignition by putting a spark plug on the #1 ignition wire and sucking on a tube attached to the vacuum advance. When I suck on the tube the advance moves the breaker plate past the eluctor creating a spark. It works! Next I tested the charging system by spinning the alternator with an electric motor. After setting the polarity the alternator works. Note the picture at 13.5 volts. Next I checked my new rebuilt power steering box by spinning with the electric motor. It works! When I start the engine I want it to kick off right away so I primed the fuel system by disconnecting the fuel line at the tank and connecting a portable boat gas tank with the inline squeeze bulb. I opened the fuel line at the carb and caught the first couple cups of gas in a small container to make sure no dirt got into the carb bowl. I then reconnected the line at the carb and squeezed the bulb till the carb bowls were full and the float valves were holding. They were. The last thing I checked was the power brake booster. As seen in the picture I hooked a vacuum pump to a small automotive vacuum tank and to the booster vacuum attachment. It works. Now when I go to start the engine, after priming the oiling system (pre-oiling) I feel confident everything will be working as they should. Just thought I would share this with all of you. It works for me! PK

Pretty cool! If your car doesn't fire right off when it's time, I don't know what will!
