Removing E body gas tank
« on: April 10, 2011 - 01:15:14 PM »
Seems pretty much straight foward.  I need to remove the gas tank in my 71 Cuda.  Some questions though.  I have a haynes, but its pretty much worthless as far a E body specific diagrams

1.  I cant access the nuts that hold the gas tank straps.  The gap between the rear of the gas tank and body are a pretty tight fit.  I had thought maybe access from above thru a truck floor plug, but none come close to the area I need access to:  Any hints to gettting these nuts off?

2.  Filler neck:  Looks like there are 2 places I need to remove the filler neck mounts.  At the gas cap area and at the truck floor.  Correct?

Any advice is appreciated, Thanks

Mel. you should remove the bumper and drop the rear valance, it makes it easier to access the bolts and the tank will drop right down.

As to the filler neck.....you are correct!  remember to lube the gasket to the tank when you put the filler neck back in.

:iagree:   I even think you won`t be able to get the straps in or out with the valance in place, if you got the nuts off...

All I had to remove was the valance on mine.  Bumper was not in the way.

I took my valance off, but also had to remove the tailpipe tips (fortunately they are just clamped on) to get the valance off. Depending on how tight the fit is, you may have to take the bumper off first but I had enough room under the bumper to remove the valance bolts.

I have used Vaseline.  If it gets into the fuel tank it dissolves.  :2thumbs:

Get the gasket warm and soft by leaving it sit in the sun a while.  I used WD-40 after using sandpaper and brake clean on the filler tube

I used a bunch of WD-40 on the filler neck.  I had a lot of trouble pulling mine out.  If you do, stop and reposition the filler neck.  The right angle really helped out.

On my Challenger, I didn't take off the rear valance or bumper to get to the J bolts.  I just used a deep socket and angle attachment.  :2cents:

do you need to unbolt the filler neck to pull the tank? Sender went bad.

You have to remove the screws attaching the filler neck to the 1/4 panel. And the screws attaching the filler neck gasket to the trunk floor.  And then you remove the tank and filler neck as an assembly.

No need to pull tank to replace just the sender.
I've done mine in the car several times.
