Removal of Power Steering?
« on: December 12, 2001 - 02:08:23 PM »
How hard would it be to remove the power steering system from a car?  Obviously removal of the pump....but where do the lines go...the steering rack?  Would this rack have to be replaced?  And what else am I missing?

Lots the B & E bodies don`t have racks they use a recirculating ball system .
The steering box has to be replaced with a manual box & the column is too short to reach the manual box so you also have to change the shaft in the column or the whole column ;)

I swapped my power steering set up with another guy who had a manual steering set up. Took the afternoon to do it and we were both happy with the results (I'm lighter up front and stronger and he can steer with one finger now). When I was looking into changing my car over I established quite a few contacts to get the pieces needed for the conversion and would be glad to share them with you if you would like. I also have an extra manual steering box if you are interested too. Once you have the box all you need is the adapter to extend your existing steering shaft, or a new steering column from a manual steering e-body.

Just send me an e-mail. The box is still on the car - an old push button Valiant I think - I could go pull it as early as next weekend. I'm sure we can make a deal (parts swap or cash).
