Picking up 70 cuda soon!
« on: April 21, 2011 - 11:03:02 AM »
Hello everyone, I have been surfing this site for a few months mainly in search of a cuda to purchase. I aquired one from a family friend down in texas. It is a 70 barracuda, orignal 318 auto, with a bench seat and factory air. Car now has a nicely built 340. I am going to pick it up soon and bring home to the midwest. Right now I am planning on using a 16x8 open trailer....does anyone have any experience using a trailer of this size? I can't really seem to find anything bigger than this from a rental place. I get the original 318 and an extra hood with the car and I doubt it will all fit. I will be using a Mountaineer with the tow package to get it. Any advice would be appreciated. Pics coming soon.

That's AWESOME!   :woohoo:
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Congrats and welcome.  Looks like you have a great project.  Re towing, even though you Mountaineer has a tow package, it's not like having a truck.  Just take it slow and easy.  Don't push it on the up hill grades, and keep an eye on your temp gauge.   Make sure the trans is in tow haul mode.  You probably won't have trailer brakes so give yourself plenty of room to stop.   Load the 'Cuda as far forward on the trailer as possible.  Slow down on down hill grades so the trailer doesn't start to whip on you. (Ask me how I know. :-)))  )   Make sure your tire pressures are up to maximum for the extra load.  Under inflated tires are the number 1 cause of blow outs.  Lastly, make sure all your fluids are topped off.  A little precaution goes a long way, especially when towing.  Good luck and let us know that you got home safe and sound.

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

Welcome,

You joined this site for the same reason I did, to look for a car.  Once I started posting and asking questions I stayed, I hope you will too.

It looks like you have a great starting point for your project.

Thanks for the replies! The merc does have a trailer brake hooked up so that should help a little. As far as the 16x8 trailer goes, I have had some people tell me it is to small......does anyone have any opinions on that?

Yes, that's small.   Most car haulers are 18' to start and go up from there.

What's the trailer rated at (weight load)?

Here is another pic, my friend was nice enough to put the engine and trans in to make the move a bit easier. So far everywhere I have checked for trailer rentals only has a 16ft trailer.......I'd rather not have to buy a trailer but I have less than 2 weeks before I have to pick it up.

I brought mine home on a rented trailer, I believe it was a 16X8.  Very tight fit but do able.  Just watch the doors and fenders, as you only have about four to six inches on either side.
