Tire brand prefs?
« on: April 28, 2011 - 02:06:58 PM »
Anyone care to say what tire brand they prefer in the 255, 265 and 275/60/15 size?

Havent decided for sure which of the 3 sizes I will go to replace the 235/60/15 tires I have now....

Right now looks like BF Goodrich and Firestone Indy 500s are the main game in town....

I consider the BFG TA series of tire to be one of the worst  I have ever used.  On the other hand, I have heard some say better things about some of their other lines.

the Indy 500s seem to be better thought of from some of the reviews.

We are pretty much screwed for street tires in a 15" these days...if one wants decent handling.

I have the firestone Indy 500's , 235/60/R-15 on the front and 255/60/R-15 on the rear  on both my Challenger and a 455/4 speed Regal . For the money I think they are the best bang for the buck. BFG T/A are...OK for the first 6 months then they turn hard like a hockey puck.
Like what was already said ... not much in the way of "good rubber" for our 15 sizes. :crying:

besides getting hard, I found the TA's change direction every time you run over a crack that runs lengthwise in the road...just squirrelly...and no traction.

I run the same nittos on both my Buicks most of the time...they handle okay in the rain...but, then, it does not rain here so that is not saying much.

I have some older Firehawks on the front of one and some Michelin Pilots on the other and it is surprising how well both cars handle for having dr's on the rear.

Let me ask about your taste. Do you want/prefer a raised white letter old school style, or is a black wall tire fine with you?

I'm guessing you are after more  street tire than drag radial. If that is the case, I'd go with the Firehawks. Good street manners, don't expect fantastic traction @ launch.  :2cents:

I have Mickey Thompson on all four and the price wasnt that bad. Good looking tires with  speed rated "T" and AA on tread traction!

Had the Challenger out yesterday and did some mild cornering work with the 4 year old Indy 500's. As they heated up traction got better. In fact pulling off to the side of the road I could hear the fine gravel being picked up and flinging up in the fenderwells. That's pretty sticky IMO. Tried a half hearted (3 grand & slip the clutch) burnout and could bearly manage a scratch. ::)

Only complaint is they pickup small rocks that pepper the areas behind the wheels. Next tires maybe more of a dry season (non blocked) pattern.

Thanks guys.

To answer the question about looks/letters....well, I was torn on that too...I dont like the look of the BFGs white letters as much as I do the Indy's.

My wife says no letters, one kids says no letters, the other says letters...and I am torn...LOL

What about Cooper cobras?

right now I have 235/60/15 in the rear and 195/60/15 in the front in the Michelin Roadtamers.

I cant get much of a brunout either.....not sure if thats due to the trutarc and good traction or if my engine is just too weak down low...LOL

Ok, so just figured out that I have Michelin Harmony Touring tires on the front, and in 195 65 15 size (not 60 series like I thought)......and Roadtamer 950 tires in the back  235 60 15.

I assumed the front and rear tires matched in make.   duh.

Well, glad Looked.

If you don't want the raised white letters just mount them to the inside . That's what I did on the Buick

Oh yeah, that is the plan, whichever tire I end up with, if I decide I want to stay blackwall.

I like the look of redlines and the Indys white letters....otherwise will likely go blackside out.

The last time I had white letters it was on my truck and the cleaning is a pita. I told myself back then "never again"...plus going blackwalls make the tires look bigger...LOL
