Fiberglass hood bulge: How about no springs?
« on: April 30, 2011 - 07:30:20 PM »
Ive been reading the other posts with guys with the same prob I have:   If I were to just take off the hood springs  (Yes, they are the proper springs for fiberglass hoods ):  I'm wondering if that would take care of the prob, with no possible damage?.  I dont mind propping up the hood when its open

No springs on my AAR turn buckles from ACE hardware.
U can adjust how high u want to open the hood.

Are you asking if you take the springs off will that eliminate the hood bulge? I don`t think it would if that is youre question.

Removing the fiberglass rated springs did remove the bulge

Well I stand corrected then. In another thread I mentioned using trampoline springs it is what I use on my hood now. You may want to consider trying them I`m guessing the tension on the trampoline spring isn`t as strong as the springs you removed. They should hold up your hood without bulging the hood. Were your springs from Penstar by chance? I had them and they are terrible!

Good Choice Mel.
Less stress on the hood support.
Do not use a stick to hold up the hood.
It could damage the hood if it slips or if not placed properly.
NEVER pull the hood open at the center of the scoop opening or top.

Place your hand inside the scoop at the corner..... lift up to grasp the front of the hood .
That is the correct Plymouth bulletin recommendation.

Unless someone sticks their head under the hood, the turn buckles are not noticable.
U could paint them to match the car.

Not sure why I would need to pick up the hood at the side of the scoop area?  The hood pops up fine when the hood catch is pressed

The original fiberglass hoods did not use the spring or latch release. I`ve heard that over time you will wear a hole in the hood from that spring. I read a post where someone put some springs around the hood pins it gave the hood a little boost so you can grab under the hood and lift it like normal. You could put a small plate on your hood where the spring meets to keep it from wearing through a piece of polished SS might not look bad, maybe just some silicone or liquid nails type stuff would hold it in place.

I was thinking of re-using the latch assembly for my hood just for a little extra insurance if I drove off and the hood pins werent in. I just don`t know how strong it would be since it would only be screwed into the fiberglass.
