New girl!
« on: May 11, 2011 - 01:08:25 AM »
Hello folks!
I've heard so much about this sight, its a pleasure to be here!

Owning a '71 hemi 'cuda someday has gone to the top of my bucket list and I have well thought out plan to get there. First plan of action is play every multi-million dollar lottery between now and the Mecum Auction in Indy next week. In the event that plan fails  :smilielol:  I'm just going to hope and pray the Mopar Gods smile on me and allow me to find the perfect car in a field, in a barn, in some old ladies garage, at a church sale, etc. Realistically, I'll probably spend the rest of my life dreaming about my 'cuda, but hey, you never know!

I remember like it was yesterday seeing this car around my town, I think I was 10-11 years old and already had a love for cars inspired by my dad. There was an orange Judge in town at the same time, and I'll swear the 'cuda and the Judge would sneer at each other as they passed on High Street. Sounds corny, right?

For a chick, I'm excellent at washing/waxing/detailing. I've even done my own tune ups! My Caddy mech showed me how to clean the throttle body assembly on my Northstar, he said I was ready to do a engine restoration now.  I'm thinking he was kidding....

But that would be the goal, to re-birth, (restore), a 71 hemi cuda.

So, in-between buying lottery tickets, checking fields, barns and odd sales, I've decided to jump in here and learn as much as I can "just in case" that car pops up somewhere and I'll be able to evaluate it with some sense of security and knowledge. I'd like to thank you all in advance for your patience and good humor as I'm bound to ask some really ridiculous questions.

Laurie

Welcome Laurie and good luck with your search.

Thought I would mention this before the other guys on here do-----------  while you are making plans for bringing home the prize Cuda, have you considered dating a guy with a nice Mopar?

Having a certain car in mind isn't a bad idea. But here's something for you to think on...

You could buy any 70-74 cuda, and turn it into a 71 hemi cuda

Lot cheaper and easier to pull that off then it is to find an actual, original 71 hemi cuda.

Welcome to CC.Com

If you can't find a '71, you can always get that '72 Hemi Cuda and swap out the grille and fenders

Charlie, I'd consider dating ANY guy who has a job and who doesn't live with his mother.

ARGH! I wish I had a better understanding of what would be involved. Details please? But I'll admit to being totally committed to a '71 if possible.  Is the 71 really that rare and unattainable?

And the engine too? right?

Thank you!!

I have a question about the 2 cars being offered at Mecum next week, there's a blue one and a black one. To my incredibly uneducated eye, the blue one seems more 'correct' as it has the wood steering wheel. I've also noticed that car has been for sale for quite a while when I googled it, I think they refused a bid of 400K and 375K at 2 different auctions. I'm assuming the owner believes the car is worth more, can that be true? There must be amazing expense involved in hauling that car from sale to sale....

I guess my school is officially in session, thanks guys!

If you found a 70 and wanted to convert it to a 71, you would need to swap out the grille and front fenders (or just add gills to the fenders) not sure if you would need to swap out the header panel or not. And depending on the motor you might need to swap out motors. If you found a 72-74, you would have to swap out the grille, header panel, front fenders, rear quarters (they have different side reflectors), tail panel, and tail lights.

And crazily enough, that would still probably be cheaper than buying an original 71 hemi cuda. Converting any other year to a 71 hemi cuda would probably cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $60k. Assuming you could do some work yourself, but also assuming you splurged on some parts like a crate motor and such. If you found a 72-74 the original cost of the car would be less than a 70 or 71 as well.

The easiest thing would be to find a 71, that was not a hemi cuda and convert it. As then it is just a matter of an engine and some badging. But it can be done with any 70-74 cuda/barracuda. The cost for conversion would be about the same for 71-74, because the 71 would cost more because it was a 1 year run only, but you would have to get a lot more parts for a 72-74. A 70 would be the most expensive way to convert, because it also demands a higher price being a 1 year only run, but you would still need to buy all the parts to convert it.

hello laurie welcome and enjoy the forum.
greetings arno :netherlands:

Thanks Arno! Are you from the Netherlands? I have a great story that's way off topic... has to do with
a Royal Netherlands P3 (C model I think) that landed and parked beside my Navy C130 in Manama Bahrain years ago.... oh gosh....

Thanks Dave! They just drew the powerball numbers, have to check my tickets! Time's running out! LOL!
You like the black one more than the blue one... why?  Doesn't the black one have the 'wrong' steering wheel?
Laurie!
