440-6 vrs stock 440???

Hey guys,
Got a quick question.
Besides having 3-2 carbs/intake on a 440-6 what other differences are there versus a stock 440?
Can a person just slap on a 3-2 carbs/intake on a stock 440 and go?
I've heard of exhaust manifolds, rods and other parts being specifically identified for 440-6 and was just curious as to what makes it different?

I always heard the Six Pack rods were bigger.

The short answer is yes, you can slap a 6 pack top end onto a 440 block, but there are differences to the way the 6 pack engines were built at the factory, with pretty much everything internal, such as different rods and cam shaft.  You can take any 440 block and turn it into a 6 pack with the right parts.  That's what I did.

The original six pack engines had heavier rods and were externally balanced because of it.  It also had a different cam and several other high performance parts internally.  IMHO, a well built modern 440 with good aftermarket rods and pistons and a modern cam grind will run circles around the old engine with the sixpack stuff.  Just put a six pack set up on it, tune it correctly, and make sure you have an extra set of tires to replace the ones you smoke off of the rims.  I personally think a good 4 barrel carb is a little faster and easier to keep in tune, but nothing looks as cool on top of a 440 as the six pack set up.  (except maybe a 6-71 blower)
