Hi guys,

Got the engine to run and idle after a long rest.   

I had water in cyl 1 and one of the other cyl, both on the same side. 

It needed lots of oil to get the engine to crank past the rusted area and now it runs and idles great but the left bank smokes a lot...blue smoke.   Hope the rings settle back in after running it for a while... any ideas why I would get water in the cyl holes to start with?     THe radiator was bone dry after all those years and it smoked before I filled it.   
 
Also, I have this question; why did the 1970-71 318 create 230hp vs the later years producing 150 hp??
 
1970- 318 ci 2V 230 hp (170 kW)
1972- 318 ci 2V 150 hp (110 kW)

The change in horse power after 1970 was due to lower compression engines, and pollution control devices finding there way under the hood.

A 1970 440 engine was rated at 375HP. A 1979 440 engine was rated at 175HP.   :crying:

I can't answer your question about the water.

The later engine were down on power due to emission equipment BUT just a little from previous years.  The 318's DID NOT go from 230 hp to 150 hp.  In 72, the factories were required to start listing horsepower numbers with all the accessories installed on the engine.  Before that time they weren't.  THat's the difference between "gross" and "net" horsepower ratings.

Were the cylinders with water in them right next together?  If they were, you could have a bad head gasket.  Watch the coolent level.  If it starts to go down, you know why.  Also, the engine can overheat with a bad head gasket.
