Cuda grille paint removal
« on: May 20, 2011 - 01:32:36 PM »
I have a 71’ grille that is in great shape but the black repaint someone did previously has got to go.  Looking around this site it sounds like sand blasting is the way to go but I need a recommendation on the correct media to use, I’m afraid the aluminum oxide I usually use will be a little too harsh on the plastic.  Any recommendations?

As you know, 71 grills are made of gold.  Be very careful with blasting.  I've never tried it but a lot of guys blast delicate parts with baking soda.  You have to make sure you neutralize the soda after blasting or you can have paint issues down the road.

I just had my 74 Barracuda grill stripped....they used plastic media to remove the paint. Came out nice, John.

Walnut shells are good to remove paint and would be gentle on your plastic grill.  You probably would want to use a blast cabinet so you don't loose your shells.  PK
