Power Surge: Electronic Ignition 318
« on: May 24, 2011 - 07:01:53 AM »
On my way home from Mason Dixon Mopar show, I got a few "misses" at about 80mph in my 68 D100. I m running an Orange Box and one of those electronic voltage regulators that are black to look similar to originals in cars.

When this happened the Amp gauge jumped around for a minute. I don't think that I was anywhere near 5000rpm which is where i think the orange boxes are limited.

Could this have been the box? regualtor? alternator? I am not an expert with elecronics.

Thanks!

Was the amp meter pegging or going to discharge?

It happened so fast, but i think i recall it jumping up and down the same distance. Kind of haywire..... about a 1/4" each way. Then all was fine?  :clueless: always runs perfect otherwise.

I don't know what it was, but I doubt your ignition had anything to do with it. Just be glad it went away and didn't leave you stranded.

From what I've read if the electronics fail they die completely and may come back after cooling off, only thing that comes to mind is a short in the alternator or a poor ground....no personal experience with either.

I was thinking maybe something in the charging system too. It has to be something that would fluctuate major current swings like he saw on the amp gauge. The Voltage regulator would still be in play too. Does this truck have a bulkhead connection like the E-Bodies?

It only has a wire going to each side of the regulator. I'll have to try and post a pic of my setup....
