installing a flip top gas cap on a 72 challenger
« on: May 26, 2011 - 09:45:18 PM »
I'd like to install a flip top gas cap on a 72 challenger. I know it's not stock but neither is the engine and I always liked the look of them. I ordered the cap and trim ring from yearone. When test fitting it looked perfect except for the rubber seal that comes with it. It's supposed to seal against the fuel filler opening but its about 1/2" or so too short. Is this a common problem? What's the solution? Thanks in advance.

just so you know, it does not seal against the filler tube. there is supose to be an actual gas cap to lock onto the tube just like your standard cap. it is a very small cap that fits in the opening,

You can get one at any of the local parts stores.  I just got a non-locking cap (Murray Ultra Part #6807) at O-Reilly's for $6.

I'm not sure what a 72 had but for 1970 there was vented and non-vented depending on emmissions equipment? Different sizes in filler neck too.
