TA 340/6 Cam Specs & Replacement?
« on: May 27, 2011 - 05:54:37 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm having my TA motor rebuilt and need to replace the non stock cam in it.  Can someone provide me with the TA 340 cam specs and a recommendation for obtaining an "over the counter" cam replacement from like Summit Racing as well as a recommendation for a "cam build shop"?

I understand I could get "just a little more" performance by modifying the specs just a little.  That being the case, what would those specs be?

Thanks

the factory 340 cam is still available from Mopar Perf , it has mild specs though , by matching up the duration & overlap you can get a more modern grind that will sound the same with better performance , Lunati has some cool grinds available that could be matched up

My motor builder wants to go with the Stock Cam specs to avoid any problems getting the timing perfect.  Given it will have plenty of stock power now that it is all freshly rebuilt, I am inclined to go with his recommendation unless I hear back from you guys on how to time a modern grind cam and what timing specs are recommended for the 340 six pac.

not sure what makes him think the new replacement cam and gears will be perfectly timed unless he degrees it in.....and if he is going to do it right and degree it, then you might as well get a more modern designed cam that will perform a bit better

The factory timing was not optimum for the stock cam , timing needs to be set where it makes the best power this requires modifing .
I do not have the stock specs handy but with less overlap & more lift & a slight increase in duration , it will run better make better power & milage , I suggest you leave the vacuum advance disconnected , set timing at 36* at 3000 rpm & you should have about 16* at idle , the stock cam design is 40+ years old ,there are better cams available
