Man - where did you learn to weld like that? Each weld is nice and uniform as is your plug welds. They look like a machine wleded them. What welder do you use?

Cheers guys!

I have only been welding seriously since starting this rebuild, so half a year or so.
I practiced a bit on various pieces of metal to see what gave the best penetration, and I have experienced welders around to ask questions.
I try and weld like a robot, ie: doing the same thing over and over. Seems to work!
The welder is either a big old uni-mig or a lincoln. The uni-mig is better.

I like to do rows of stitch welds where I can, instead of a continuous bead, that way I can run the welder hotter for flat, full penetration welds, and have less risk of blowing holes.
I try to make each stitch weld right on the limit of blowing a hole, then let it cool for a couple of seconds and do the next. If you tried to do a continuous bead at that heat it would
blow a hole immediately.

Check out my build blog for the latest work!

Cheers,
Aaron

A little of the latest:

Built a rotisserie for working on the underside. Good fun spinning the car around!
It's not finished yet, this was a test fit.

Base plate for the main rollbar.

Welded in place with a mockup of the rollbar footplate.

This is the brace for rollbar backstays to mount to.

Here is the structure underneath. 3mm plates on the chassis rails with 50x50x3mm RHS supports and lateral and diagonal bracing.

A mockup of the engine bay braces.

Filling holes.

Around the door and window apertures I've added one to two plug welds in between each factory spot weld.

And I've also added a handbrake to get rid of the crap factory parking brake.

Cheers!
Aaron.
