The valve damage is done when the engine is shut off. As the heat dissapates, the cold air is pulled into the open header
and up to the valves. With a complete exhaust, the pipes warm the air first so it becomes a non issue.

aha, that makes sense! so close cutouts before shutting off the engine!

......and let it idle for 2 to 4 min before shutting it off this should be done anyway .. cooldown cycle and will warm up the rest of the exhaust.

After a bit of research online it seems that the old 'burning valves with open headers' story is pretty much an old wives tale.

And anyway, I don't see how air cold enough to do damage could travel up a set of hot full length headers in time to warp a valve before it cools naturally...
Maybe you'd have something to worry about if you lived in the Arctic and ran shorty headers.

The headers cool very rapidly, and it is not a wives tale. I have seen it happen. Now, I will admit that
I have only seen it happen in my region (midwest U.S) when it was cold outside.(late fall or winter). Also, the
damage isn't done from 1 time. Both times I saw the damage, the engines were in cars that were in the process of being
built and the owners would get that "itch" to hear the motor run on several occasions.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I love what you are doing on your `Cuda Aaron, it is always a pleasure to jump on and have a look at what your up to, it is like a hot rodders dream build with everything layed out methodically and in a certain procedure. Very neat in deed buddy :2thumbs:

As for valves bending when being cooled rapidly, that does not sound right at all, the heat generated inside and engine is fierce, but do not forget that the area between a cylinder and head would constantly be changing temperature with every cycle and or revolution, because the air fuel mixture coming in through the carburetor is in fact quite cool, and guys with turbos and intercoolers get a massive rush of cold air coming in that it creates massive amounts of horsepower, so i can not see how a valve could bend with a burst of cold air, Valves will bend if they hit the piston or a foreign item that made its way in an engine, and i do know that Titanium valves have a tendency to bend because of the material they are made of, but they still function with in an engine as Titanium has that tendency to do so. That's just my :2cents: have a good one guys

Keep up the great work Aaron

Hey!
Yeah, I've been working on the car, but it's not the most exciting work, hence the lack of updates.
I'll be dipping and blasting the shell soon, and then putting panels back on it.

Here's a little of the latest work:

Finished the mounting of the brake line, fuel line, and handbrake cables. I've welded nuts on to the body to mount the various clips to.

And here's another little video of the motor:

O my that is some amazing and inspiring work.  I might have to take the cage Idea that's really slick how it mounts and stays removable.
