carlisle vs mopar nats ohio ..which is better
« on: May 28, 2011 - 06:46:06 AM »
ok guys and girls, im trying to get things tied up here and raise enough spare cash for a small holiday and take in either carlisle or the nationals in ohio, so please give me your opinions , which is better and why?, i really can only manage about two weeks so i want to get as much of a  mopar fix as i can get!!!which has  a better swap meet/ car display etc which is easier to get around.??im leaning towards the nationals as it gives me a bit more time to plan but im open to suggestions!i will be catching up with a good friend for the first time and hopefully we can attend together so driving to either shouldnt be a problem at this stage, cmon guys i need to hear some thoughts!!!! :aussie: :aussie: :aussie:

Carlisle hands down the best overall show............however, if you want to see drag racing all day long for all three days then it would be the Mopar Nats. Carlisle has racing on Friday night only and it is at a small local strip removed from the the car show grounds, but not a long distace to drive.

Carlisle here as I've never been top Ohio Mopar nats before, but heard from a buddy who goes regualrly, that it ain't all that. If you don't like seeing INSANELY priced parts, don't go to either show for the swap meets.

I've been to both, and I keep going back to Carlisle.  I admit it's a little closer for me tho.  While you're getting your Mopar fix you can head to the Walter P. Chrysler museum as well.  Ohio is a little closer to Michigan but it's still not bad from PA.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Carlisle for sure. It is WAY bigger in my eyes. It has been about 10 years since I have been to the Nats though.....

Its always Hot at both events so bring plenty of Sun Screen!

The Mopar Nats is more about the racing than show cars. Cars are parked anywhere there. At least at Carlisle they are organized by year, make, and model.  Plus the cost of entering the Mopar Nats is twice what you pay at Carlisle.

Get to the strip at Carlisle EARLY

We got there a full hour before things were supposed to start last year and we ended up in the "cheap seats" at the end of the track....and couldnt see any of the action.  Not sure if we are going to bother this year or not.

I think that this  is a great post and an interesting question ! I am really surprise it hasn't gotten a much stronger response !
We have a fellow member looking to travel to the US  :wavingflag:for a car show lets give him all the info we can to help him make the descision that is best for him !
Number one US car show rule 85% of everything you hear is BS :blah: :blah: :blah: Now that said
Well ozrt4406  whitesatinmopar does bring up a great point about Mopar Nats have a drag strip and Carlisle not . I have never been much on racing and would have never thought of that .
For me I live much closer to the Nats about 2 hours verses around 8 hours to Carlisle . I have been to every Mopar Nationals  ( even the Indy ones ) since 1986 . it is a very large gathering of cars and parts . in my opinion the nats is not only more expensive to enter but parts are alot higher also . It has a much higher end business feel to the parts area . If it was been raining it can bee a real mud mess but thats few and far between in August . All the retails are located together in a central area . There is a nice large car for sale area .
As for the car show side of it you can be there the whole weekend start to finish and never see all the cars ! Why you ask ? Is there that many ? Who knows because there is zero organization ! Cars are not grouped by make or body style or color or even gas mileage ! So at the end of each day whatever cars leave when they return tomorrow they park where ever they can find along with all the cars that you missed that parked where you had already looked yesterday ! lol and the Chinese fire drill starts over again tomorrow morning . Are you confused ? If so you are experiancing the feeling of the Mopar Nats car show  !!
Now for my opinion on Carlisle  I believe I have only been maybe 5 times I will be there again this year
Lower gate price ( almost half ) very relaxed easy to get along with atmosphere . ( I know alot of people at both shows so I always have a good time visiting )  the parts area at Carlisle is also very impressive but the isles at least feel wider and everything doesnt feel like it is piled onto every available inch of space there is alot more breathing room . I my experiance the sellers will work with you alot more on pricing than at the Nats and the same part at the Nats seems to cost more already ! You can find almost any part at either show with a little knowledge , some networking ,  alot of patience , and some sunscreen .
Carlisle also was a set aside cars for sale area that is very nice . And they have a few buildings were you can get a break from the sun
When it comes to the show car side that is were the most noticable difference jumps out at you ! Cars are grouped by body style   A body  together B body together  E body together ect .  You can look at just your favorites or time permitting you can look at them all !!!! And tommorro pick up were you left off and not miss awhole lot . If your on the parts side about to buy something but you arent sure if it is the correct part you know right were to find a car to look at and find out if it is correct
I hope this helps you some in your descision !! And I hope other  member post to agree or disagree with me in an effort to help you .

I will say one thing mate If you make it all the way over the the states to see either car show (this year , next year , or whenever ) it would be a pleasure to meet you . I will even pay your admission into the show and all the Dr Pepper you can drink is on me !! I have hear Dr Pepper is very popular Down Under .
Good Luck to you and safe travels

Well said.   :grinyes:

You brought up the cars for sale areas (car corral). I was equally impressed by both events.

If you can live without the drag strip, go to Carlisle. The Nats want $100, even if you want to make a pass for the fun of it.

You brought up picking up where you left off the previous day in going thru the parts area at Carlisle. At the ends of each row is a letter, then on the ground is a number for each vendor. For instance, you left off at a vendor that had area E50- E52. It took me a few years to learn this. I would go back and never be able to find a vendor.    :banghead:

I typed a responce to this thread last week but it isn't here anymore.  Did I hit a wrong button so it wasn't posted or did it get deleted?

I've never been to Carlisle but I've been going to the Nat's for years.  This will be my 17th year going and I'm only 33.  It is already a 10 hour drive to Ohio for me.  I have no desire to drive any farther.

Quote
the Mopar Nats is more about the racing than show cars.

This couldn't be farther from the truth.  99% of the swap area is restoration parts...not race parts.  The focus of the Nat's is the show cars...the racing is just a bonus.  When I'm at a large show, I want to here engines at full throttle all day.  A quiet car show is boring to me.

From what I have seen, Carlisle is more organised but that isn't nessesarily a good thing.  If I see row after row of only E-bodies, I'm going to start glossing over a lot of them.  I'm going to look at the oddball stuff(/6 abd odd paint combos) and pass on the Hemi cars.  With a bunch of different cars all mixed in together, I can look at each one closer.

The judging is held on Friday.  The only class that extends into Saturday is the OE class.  On Friday, the judged cars are all parked together by body style.  However, on Saturday, you can park next to whoever you want.  If you have friends ther with other body styles, you can still park next to them.  Can you do that at Carlisle?(I really don't know..I'm asking)

For me, I can't see enjoying Carlisle as much as the Nats.  I know they have completely different atmospheres.  I guess it just comes down to personal preference.
