Help with carb
« on: May 28, 2011 - 01:35:57 PM »
The motor is a 383 stroker (438) with a very mild cam.  Stock intake and stock extruded honed exhaust manifolds.  Everything on the car is stock or stock looking.

I bought a ProFrom 850 and I just can't bring myself to put it on the car.  It stands out like a sore thumb with everything else being stock on the car and motor.....  so here's where I need some help.  Is there a stock or stock looking carb that will pump 850cfm or at least 750 cfm?

The original carb was a Holley 4160 list 4218, but it's long gone.  Does anyone have an extra stock 383 auto Holley carb?

Thanks!

Cody, I think Neil has mentioned that a TQ runs 850 cfm.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I have an original 383 holley 600 if that works
the TQ is 800 CFM but had a vacuum secondary ssytem to prvent stumbling , the 850 is too big for a stock 383 typically 750-800 is the zone I would look in for aftermarket carbs

Being that the motor is out to 438 CID, you should be able to use a carb from a 440 if you want to stay stock looking.  Although I don't think an AVS, even modified, will flow enough CFM to run your motor at higher RPM's.  A Holley 750 dual feed, double pump carb is pretty easy to come by in decent used condition.  I would start there.  Then again, it won't look totally stock.

Thanks for the help guys.

My calculations show my engine to need about 823CFM.  I'm thinking Challenger6pak makes a good point.  I think 800 CFM should be the lowest I should put on this engine.  Much less and the motor will come up short on the higher RPM.

:banghead:  Why is this so hard!  All I want is a stock looking carb that flows 800 to 850 CFM!   :banghead:

It is hard because a stock motor does not need that much carb.  You do have a difficult option.  You could use a competition series Thermoquad.  It will flow 800 cfm.  Tuning is a problem.  The strip kits with jets etc. are unavailable.  It is a vaccum secondary carb also.  I don't know how restored the rest of the car is.  It sounds pretty stock.  Maybe you could go with the Holley and make your car a "Day2" restoration.  70's style mags etc.  No Hijackers...please.  You could also use 2 AFB's and a Hemi aircleaner, if the carb spacing is correct.

The new Edelbrock Thunder carbs ARE AVS's and come as big as 800. They look stock and are even available with an electric choke. They're a little pricey, but might well be worth it.

Cheapest one I could find on feebay....

This is the exact carb I was thinking when I was reading the thread.  You could even paint it with that resto carb paint and make it look more stockish.  Good luck.

the reason it is so hard is all the engines used small carbs from the factory until the TQ came out , this is why the 6 pack worked so well , it was the first time a decent sized carb system was available , no wa single 4 bbl will generally kick ass on a 6 pack because the single 4 bbls & intakes are far better , I would run the Proform with a dual snorkle AC & it will hide under it

I agree.  It took a lot of work to get my 6 pack to perform as well as an 850.

This is not what anyone wants to hear, but I'm going to run the factory stock carb.  Holley 4160.

Here's what it boiled down to for me....  I've chosen to make this Challenger drivable art that will look like it roll off the showroom floor.  While I'm doing everything stock, it's not a 100 point car because I've made some things like the body paint to nice.  It's buffed out to a show car finish.

I'll be keeping the ProForm in case I want to put it on there in the future.

Thanks for all the help and I'll try to get some photos up soon.
