Sure is frustrating huh! Gotta be a way of prescreening people that want to be members?

If you see number of posts = 1 you have to know it's spam. Can't the moderator shut the userid down?

heres the thing about spam.  it definitely seems to come in waves which can make it a little difficult to handle.  one very strict policy I can implement that I have done in the past is to preapprove every user account.  I can usually tell from the name and email address who is legit and who isnt.  the problem with that is the wait time for legit users.  i may not be at my computer for hours at a time, and I know it can be frustrating for real people to wait for an unknown amount of time when they want to participate.  they may not even come back.  i know ive had that happen to me before.  so its a tough one.  but if the spam gets much worse i guess ill have to go back to that strategy for awhile.

If we get waves of spammers you may need to take that route. If it is only a couple that blast out tons of messages maybe you can just shut it down and depend on us to report them as we see them.

Personaly I do not mind just clicking on the "report to moderator" link and have done so in the past. Our moderators seem to get rid of the smucks fast enough. If we all work to just report this crap to the mods I think we can deal with it. I would hate to see real users not get to enjoy the site just because they can't get registered quickly.  :2cents:

I don`t really care if there`s an occasional sale massage, it`s the 20 per minute ones that I hate.  Would it be worth trying to make it impossible to post that many new topics in such a short amount of time, in the same forum?  Is there a kind of interval in which they post?

I agree about "report to moderator" I've done that many times. Ross and the other Mod's do a fantastic job and no one expects them to be at their computor 24-7.  That's a good idea about limiting how many posts/day for the first week or so.... if that's possible to do? :dunno:
I just don't get the mentality of it all....like I'm really gonna buy something after you have pissed me off? :pullinghair:

Can't remember the process when I joined up, but some forums have a security question (that automatically changes) or one of those "type the word you see in the image" boxes when opening an account.

Is that something that's has been implemented for this forum? Might be worth looking into.

we have the word verification and click a link in an email in place, so anyone who does end up spamming here got around both of those.  were fine during the day.  i have a notification coming to my phone each time someone joins and i check them out immediately.  its the f-ers that joing up in the middle of the night when im asleep  :swear:  and that makes sense anyway.  i can tell from the domains that most of the spammers are overseas
