Red Challenger in gone in 60 seconds
« on: June 08, 2011 - 07:08:32 PM »
I was watching the 1974 version of Gone in 60 seconds and am puzzled about the red challenger. It has 70-71 side markers, 72-74 tail lights, a 72-74 grill with 1970 headlight bezels. It also has a 70-71 ralley dash and a bumble bee stripe with a challenger R/T emblem. They would've had to install a 72-74 tail light panel on a 70-71 challenger. IT seems like a lot of work especially when there were plenty of challengers around. Anyone have any ideas on this? Did the real early 72's have 70-71 side markers??????????

I am guessing it was cheaper to find a 1970 because it was a few years old and then he tried to make it look like a late model.

Talk about being heading in the wrong direction!

That is absolutely what happened. You have to remember, Gone in 60 Seconds came out in 1974, so in keeping with the current times, the 1970 Challengers were facelifted to look like a newer challenger. Also, with almost four times the amount of '70s on the street compared to '73-'74s, it was very logical to make that move.

In the first scenes, the Challenger stolen from LAX had it's VIN swapped, with a wrecked challenger bought at auction. If you pause the movie, you will see that a Real Deal 383 R/T was destroyed! I can't remember off the top of my head, but I believe that car was an LA built R/T as well...

Burt Renolds can't drive, anyway, only 6? They are like flies, swat one down and another takes its place.  Destroying Chargers now that is serious, 3 Challengers destroyed in Vanishing Point original, makes me angry but still a great movie.

It makes me wonder why moparts are still being destroyed. Dukes fest- they destroy a 69 charger every year. Deathproof- they destroy how ever many chargers and challengers. I think its time to move on to a different type of car other than a classic mopar.

I agree but at least it is putting the MOPAR brand out where it has earned the right to be, way out in front of the rest. Remember Steve McQueen in The Getaway, he shot gunned a Plymouth Fury who didn't hurt anybody.   :villagers:

I didn't know they only trashed three challengers in the Barry Bostwick vanishing point,  thought it was more.

Anyone ever notice the door window frames on the challenger in death proof?  Weird.

Yep, there was something like 90K Chargers built in 1968, around 60K in 1969, and another 30-40K in 1970...And to think the Dukes destroyed 300 of 'em in just 7 short years...Wow, and more were destroyed through drunk driving, crushing, sitting in backyards awaiting idiots with a wad of cash, collectors hoarding them in barns again, waiting on the same idiots with that same wad of cash....What a waste....
